I've tried everything. Not really, but it feels that way.

I got the mysterious p2187 code the other day, "lean at idle". Then i did tons of OCD rearch, and down the rabbit hole i went. I dismantled the car by removing the TMIC, battery, and intake. I looked over all the hoses, cleaned the MAF (which was surprisingly dirty), checked bolts on the throttle body, checked the EGR delete bits, and made sure all sensors were clean. I also removed the Purge Valve Solenoid and tried blowing through it, but it appeared ok.

I didn't find anything except for that dirty MAF and a plug that fell off the throttle body, from the coolant bypass mod. But, that's not a vacuum source anyway, right? Besides I put another on. I reassembled everything making sure to tighten down correctly and started her up. Car was fine for like 5 miles, then the check engine light came on. Same issues.

I went to work today and stopped at Advance Auto for a new Purge Solenoid Valve, since I read most 2187 codes are related to that. I put the new one on and crossed my fingers, nothing. Same issue.

My question now is, could it be an o2 sensor with no codes for that showing up? Is there something I missed? Any insight would be appreciated before i have to succumb to the Mazda dealership overlords.

Sounds like a massive leak somewhere. If you tap the throttle does your AFR change at all?

I had 2187, was the black ground wire on the MAF harness making poor conection. Removed pin, squeezed female side tighter and no more 2187. While idling wiggle the black ground wire and listen for idle change or watch and see if AFR swings.

@neganox; what does it mean if the AFR's don't change while tapping the throttle?

Primary o2 was bad. Grabbed the NGK at Advance Auto and swapped it out. All good now, thanks for the help everyone.

Well it's my turn to play. Intake coupler is OK, MAF clean (still cleaned it). Next up, throttle tap, as 137k on original oxygen sensor. So I also have 1 manifold nut missing, and a downpipe bolt and stud gone. Rejected by my car. Because she's evil. [IMG][IMG]
