Dang, man; good thing you built. It looks like a windowed block was just a matter of time with that rod. Did you have any symptoms like the characteristic pulsing clutch as you depressed the pedal to let you know your rod was bent?

I knew exactly when it happened. Drove it the 25 miles home, shut it off, called the shop. Didn`t start it again. And yeah, it was knocking and doing the clutch pedal tango.

Just a high wtq pull? Were you flooring it in 6th or something?

No, it happened in 3rd. Got into a patch of water on the service road getting on the highway, hit the rev limiter pretty hard. Spark cut, methanol kept spraying a`la WOTBOX effect, 31psi when the spark came back, and getting off throttle so there was absolutely nowhere for the boost to go. It had already made 421ft/lbs at 29psi so I`m sure the 31psi put the force of Zeus in the cylinder.

Barring a shipping SNAFU, car should be done for next weekend (the weekend after the 4th). The block is done, engine fasteners will be in hand tomorrow. Bearings ordered, should arrive saturday afternoon. Shop is close sun-tues for the holiday, but they`re hoping to fire it up friday. Gonna break it in with a very specific dyno process for new motors so it`ll be ready to go when I pick it up.

Do you have a 4 bar map sensor? I remember when I hooked up my wastegate wrong it boosted to the sky, pegged at like 28.5 psi or something, but likely much higher. Car drove fine for a good while afterwards. Builder said that all of my rod bearings were tore up, and my exhaust valves were cooked.

It was exactly what I thought it was. It had been running just fine up to that point, dyno'd two days prior. Just pushed too much on the stock block. It made 421 ft/lbs at 29psi. I can only imagine where it went hitting 31 almost instantly

Probably ~ 440 or so. The rule of thumb is general 10/10 @ the wheels per psi. Do you have a 3-BAR MAP or 3.5 BAR? The reason I ask is if it's only a 3-BAR, you could've pegged it and actually hit much higher boost than it can read. For all you know, you could've hit 35psi or even more.

Anyways, out of curiosity, what head studs did you use?

OEM head studs. They`ll hold 500wtq without much of a whimper and don`t require retorquing.

Yep. I figure I'll probably go the same way for the same reasons. Plus, they aren't as expensive. Pretty sure they're bolts, right?

Bolts, yes. A matter of semantics in this case.

True that. But I do think that may be why they don't need retorqued--bolts vs. studs/nuts--but I could be wrong.

Its the material and the installation procedure.

That sounds like the exact same thing that happened to my car, hit 33 psi in a split second. At least you already had plans to build. Looking forward to seeing the results man

The plan from here is to establish what PSI the Guardian Angel will drop boost to when it triggers, and have the methanol activate close to that, so if the GA triggers it basically cuts the methanol as well. I know a bit of overboost on a forged motor is much less of a concern but I really don`t want to invite Murphy`s Law.

In doing some napkin math it looks like the goal of 460whp will be doable on a fairly moderate tune. I`ll have a better exhaust mani and a slightly bigger intake, and the ability to run a bit more load so the 40hp gap should be pretty easy to hit.

Just FYI, my S3 on my old Turbosmart would drop to 17psi when the GA activated. The Synapse should drop lower (larger venting hole), but I've not overboosted once, so I'm really not sure.

I run the GFB 50/50 VTA so I`ll intentionally trigger the GA to see where it drops to. I could always trigger the meth failsafe from the GA.

That's what I'm going to do: connect the AEM AFR failsafe to the GA failsafe trigger. I'll be setting initial methanol flow and max methanol flow at 1/2 of max boost and 3/4 of max boost, respectively, regardless of pressure level GA drops to. Then I'll fine-tune based on feel, telemetry, and input from my tuner.

Any news on what happened/how long and involved the fix will be? Sending good vibes that Growler gets you 100% squared away.

So far the consensus is that it was exactly what I thought it was. The best fix would be to have the methanol failsafe triggered by idc but since it's not an option it's going to have to be triggered by the GA.

It could have been done yesterday but a last minute decision was made to get a little bit of head work done. New valve seats and guides getting installed. In a perfect world it'll be done for next weekend.
