Versatune - Setting a BigTurbo Base Tune

DISCLAIMER - This is simply a base map, spring pressure, nothing fancy. If you are not comfortable messing with this then get a pro tuner. This will be a little different for each car.
@Enki will be writing a more thorough guide to this.

!!WARNING!! - I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING YOU DO TO YOUR CAR. I am still learning this and this is just what I did to get the base setup for DD life so I can use my car.

Big Thanks to @Enki for helping with this he should be able to add more info.

    Set your settings in VT

    Grab KEOE before doing anything.
To do this you do key to the on position and check your boost value in VT. Should be .1 - .2 closer to 0 is better but .1 - .2 is normal.

    Prepare your base tune
"SAVE AFTER EACH CHANGE - TRIPLE CHECK VALUES!!!"

I used "Base 93US_98EU Octane High Load with High Flow Down Pipe" tune as it was my current tune to start for a base.

Save this tune and name it BigTurbo BaseTune Revision 1.0 , this way you don't mess up your current tune if you need to go back.

BaseMap Setup - "BigTurbo BaseTune Revision 1.0" SAVE AFTER EACH CHANGE - TRIPLE CHECK VALUES!!!

Use Multi Edit when possible it makes it much easier to fill all the fields.

    Absolute Limits
    Set - Closed Loop Limit 1, 2 , 3 all to 1
    Set - Closed Loop Open Look Load Threshold 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 all to 1

    Boost Control
Set - BCS DC Base Extended - ALL TO ZERO "use multi Edit"
This tells you wastegate to open at spring pressure and will be a good baseline, spring pressure on my CorkSport Turbo was 13.7 aka 14lb spring.

    Load Targetting
Set - BCS DC Adjustment - Load Target Correction - Incremental - ALL TO ZERO
Set - BCS DC Adjustment - Load Target Correction - Initial - ALL TO ZERO
    [IMG]

    Sensor Calibration
MAF Calibration 1 - put mafcal same in both fields, read below how to paste
MAF Calibration 2 - same stuff as 1
Copy and Paste the mafcal you need from here to excel so it formats it correctly then back to VT
    GRAB THEM HERE
These are pretty spot on to what you need, mine works great. "HTP 3.5"
If this is wrong or too far off your car won't start or idle correclty.

    MAP Calibration
My CorkSport 3.5 bar came with below listed on it.
    3.5 bar cs map
    A 330
    B 0.23
    OS 6.05

    * You will need to enable unsafe values in advance to put in "330"
    Sensor Calibration
A = MAP Scale Base Multiplier - DTC Reporting
A = MAP Scale Base Multiplier - ECU Boost Mgmt
A = MAP Scale Base Multiplier - Logging
B = MAP Scale Second Multiplier - DTC Reporting
B = MAP Scale Second Multiplier - ECU Boost Mgmt
B = MAP Scale Second Multiplier - Logging
OS = MAP Scale Additive - DTC Reporting
OS = MAP Scale Additive - ECU Boost Mgmt
OS = MAP Scale Additive - Logging
    [IMG]

    Accelerator Pedal Calibration
This does not need to be changed but I did not like the oem feel of the pedal so I made it closer a 1:1 ratio. I put a 1 in the first field and a 100 in the last then used interpolate.

    ***********WARNINGS!!!!!******TRIPLE CHECK VALUES!!!***************
    Save your TUNE again!
    ***********WARNINGS!!!!!******TRIPLE CHECK VALUES!!!***************

    Final Step
Install Turbo, MAP Sensor and EBCS - do this correctly and take your time.
I installed CS Turbo, CS 3.5 bar map, Grimpseed EBCS and HTP 3.5 intake.

My coolant line did not fit very well so I did this. I used 1/8" npt fittings to make this. You could probably use a single 90 bend barb if you install before installing that back bolt.
    THIS
    OR THIS

I used high temp pipe dope so seal it all, they had it at my local hardware store.

    Flash your new tune
    DO NOT START THE CAR

MAKE SURE YOU SET VT TO YOUR NEW SENSOR, THIS WILL CHANGE THE BOOST PRESSURE FIELD AS WELL. If you do not do this your numbers will be wrong. Ask me how I know.

Turn the key to ON - check you KOEO value for boost , if you did the MAP stuff right it should be same as stock .1 - .2 if not you may need to adjust those values.

    ***********WARNINGS!!!!!******TRIPLE CHECK VALUES!!!***************
This is just a simple base tune to get the car running and do initial logs. When you do your first log setup warnings for Aboslute Load > 2 , Knock Retard > 2 , Boost Pressure > 20 If these exceed these values, look into it , you probably have bigger issues. I am not responsible for any damage you do to your car.
    ***********WARNINGS!!!!!******TRIPLE CHECK VALUES!!!***************

Everything posted here will be specific to Johnny's tune; a more comprehensive guide will be published at a later date by myself.

A Great thread, thank you for posting. A request, if I may: as you work through the tune, put notes pertaining to what each change in the tune are attempting to accomplish, or what else is affected by that particular table (ie; we all know that upping wgdc will increase boost, but will that increased boost automatically request more fuel to maintain AFR, or do we have to revise the fuel maps?)

Yes that is what @Enki guide will be for, I do not have the know how to do all that yet. This is just a rough cut to get you back on the road. Once I learn some more and know what those fields do I can also add to this or just point to his guide.

Yeah I'm basically giving Johnny the quick and dirty to get him going and the full guide will explain the inner workings (as much as is needed for understanding of how/why as far as tuning goes).

    Bump @Enki & @JohnnyTightlips
What happened with this tuning adventure, and why are the closed loop limit set to 1 ( seems low?)
Also, cl/ol load threshold set to 1?

Attempting to do high flow mafcal?

Yes; breaking the mafcal up into two parts (open and closed loop).

Sorry, have been really busy and car has not been a priority. Right now I have a boost leak to fix before I move onto more tuning. Will update when I have a chance.

Enki is off the grid indefinitely.

If you`re interested in self tuning with VT, I say just get it and have at it. Ask all the questions you need to ask here. Load tuning was completely foreign to me (albeit tuning in general was certainly not) and between common sense, the table descriptions in VT, and the help of a few people who`d been down the VT path before me I managed to put together a healthy tune and made some great numbers in about three weeks. And now any time I make a change I (1) know how and what to adjust if necessary and (2) don`t have to pay a retuning fee.

There are a few things unique to VT that have since popped up that are absolutely pertinent and mandatory that a person be aware of. The biggest one, at least in my setup, is that it ALWAYS reverts back to the stock map sensor values every time I close the program and reopen it. That leads to underreported boost pressure, and not by a little bit. Wasn`t a huge deal for me on a built motor, but a stock motor would have never survived it. We are thinking it may be a Windows problem in my case since it doesn`t seem to happen to @JohnnyTightlips but it does it nonetheless. It takes literally two seconds to switch it to the correct values and I have since started just leaving the program open and minimized and it of course stays.

Well thanks voodoojef, I’ll be sure to ask when I run into any issues. Tuning is totally unfamiliar to me, but it is something that i’d personally like to understand (at least for my car). At the moment, my car is down, but I did follow this guide for setting up my base map. Also, is versatune aware of this issue that you are currently having? I’ll test this out too and check since I am running windows.

I messaged Versatune about it and it seems (so far) unique to my set up, but it`s definitely, definitely something I will encourage other people to check on. I was reading 25psi of boost but in reality pushing just over 31. Again, Manley rods were able to take it without breaking a sweat. Stock rods would not fare so well.

Yeah @Enki is off the grid for now so I will likely just update this to include the steps I did. It is a bit of an undertaking but I know it can help others. I have not had issues like @VoodooJef is having. His seem to be a permission issue so it never fully saves his config. I am running a windows 10 laptop and tablet but with no issues. Feel free to post any tuning questions here. I finished my 93 tune and will be doing a corn tune next summer. Life is pretty busy right now but I will try and add some time to making this tuning guide more complete.

I got around to using my tablet and I am having the same issue that Jeff is. Also, every time I open Versatune, it has to configure each time. Do any of you guys have that issue as well?

As mentioned, mine does. For now the workaround is just not closing out of VT. I just minimize it when not in use. I`ll message those guys tomorrow, as well should you. If more than one of us is having the same problem it may be something in the latest update.

Yeah it might be an issue of where it is writing the config files and you do not have proper permissions. I am sure @steve@versatune would like to see the issue first hand.

MAP sensor values can be simplified so that you don't need to enable Advanced mode. Multiply the first two numbers together to get the new first number and use 1 as the second. The offset remains the same. In the case of this example, 330 x 0.23 = 75.9 So the values you would enter are 75.9, 1, and 6.05

Thanks for the info. I can add it to the quick guide. Any idea about the issues @VoodooJef and @du_juan are seeing? I don't seem to have this problem on any of my win10 machines.
