Best Engine Oil - All Mod Levels

Items are rated based on additive analysis and overall user success.

EDIT:
Look for API SP and/or ILSAC GF-6A certifications on the oil. This will be minimum recommended for this platform.

I'd like to make this thread a list of the best oils to use based around a set of criteria outlined below:

Per UOA:

Calcium <= 2000
AND
Sodium <= 2000

With

Molybdenum >= 500
OR
ZDDP (zinc) >= 500

(Or at least somewhere close to these values)

Here's an example of what this should look like; oil in question is the oil I use (RP 5w-30 DEXOS) and the UOA is from @VashEXE :



This oil seems to work REALLY well for full e85 and also seems to test pretty well after usage.

Please post UOAs and descriptions of oils below (miles between changes, type of fueling, etc), along with a picture of the oil container (if you have one) so it can be added to the OP.

 

2018 sample is tribodyn 15w40.
3000 miles, lots of wot pulls as tuning was done on that sample. Built motor had just over 78k at the time of sample. E48 mix with Port Injection. Head lifted 4-5k miles before this sample on stock head bolts. Replaced with L19's, custom mlx gasket, then ran Rotella T6 thru the motor to flush any contaminants before switching over to the tribodyn and letting her eat again. 575whp 467tq


2017 sample on the same sheet was Brad Penn/Penn grade 10w40 semi-syntetic after 2800 miles. E48 mix on 6th port at that time. Low 500whp and low 400tq at the time of that sample

Hmm, 2500 miles and lower viscosity and flashpoint...Should this be added to the good oils list?

Side note: I found my old 8300 mile RP UOA from the blown motor and it was a bit better than the Rotella one here.

 

Good point, I was basing it off the criteria in the first post. Looks like it's consistent in the values you mentioned (viscosity and flashpoint). I wonder if another variable was at play .

 

Yeah more than happy to include it but if it's already out of spec at 2500...that might not be so good for people using this thread to make decisions.

Sorry I dont have an analysis to add but I think its worth mentioning dexos 1 gen 2 cert seems to correlate with lower ca and na. The dexos 1 gen 2 was rolled out towards the end of 2017, and pennzoil dropped ca from 2200+ to <1000 so it seems to meet this.

I plan to have this d1g2 5w30 pennz analyzed at 4500 miles or so.

 

Yeah Mango, I mention that in the other thread (see second post for link):
"DEXOS 1 Gen 2 oils are formulated around these findings and will have lower calcium/sodium with more moly and zinc."

 

Better results across the board on this one. I will not be running for more than 5k on my oil, but it's nice to know it's still good after 5k of not easy driving.

Here is the rundown of the final 2 synthetic oil competitors from a great many.

Unbiased and really good testing
I was shocked at the results.
That said I don’t know if it covers Enki’s thorough talk about chemical make up that might cause or prevent super knock. But I’m sure he can pull that info for the final competitors.
But beyond that this guy does a crazy good job of answering questions ( crazy as they may be) about what works and what doesn’t.

 

This is an entirely different thread about an entirely different aspect of engine oil.

 

So, a while back when we were all figuring out the best oils to use in our Speeds, there was no such thing as API SN Plus rated oil. For anyone who has been keeping up with the oil world, API SN (ILSAC GF-5) came out in 2010 and API SP (ILSAC GF-6) oil was announced back in 2012 and was targeted for 2017. However, it was never released. The whole reason for the delay of this new oil classification was OEMs (like Mazda) identified that there was a known current issue with SPI SN causing low speed pre-ignition in Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injected (TGDI) vehicles, as in our beloved Speeds. OEM manufacturers made a push for oil companies to at least put out a "hot-fix" for the problem while we wait for the new API SP oil classification, which they did. Enter API SN Plus.

The whole purpose for API SN Plus oil is that it's supposed to be made specifically for TGDI engines like ours and it started being sold last year and is now widely available. However, I still have yet to see any real-world testing of any of these API SN Plus oils and people still keep recommending API SN oils. In fact, ALL 3 of these "best" oils are SN rated. Has anyone tried or tested any SN Plus Oils?

 

Sounds like (logically, could be wrong here) the above listed oils have the "hotfix."

I just did a dive into the product data sheets and found that the new Dexos Gen2 Royal Purple is, in fact, SN Plus rated oil. Tribodyn and Brad Penn are both still SN rated, not SN Plus (at least not that I can verify without scouring the entirety of the internet).

So long and short is SN plus is good meaning royal purple still good?

 

Yep. Not to say the others are bad, just to say that they're not specifically SN Plus. I know a lot of the current SN Plus rated stuff have changed their formulas and may be considerably better now. I'm about to try the Castrol Titanium SN Plus stuff, personally...for science. I'll let you know how it works out.
