I probably should tape mine as well but I actually got this kit or another cheap kit off amazon.

Ok so I promise im not on drugs but apparently I only “technically have a leak down tester and so just need the gauge with a quick connect to attach to the end of the hose. Must’ve rented the compression tester from autozone the first time.

Wouldn't hurt but that one is as cheap as BK's value menu.

late on the party but the stainless steel hose from autozone, not the rental one, brand is INNOVA, bought mines from amazon tho and its actually pretty accurate as long as you lubracte the O ring where it threads on the block so it seal good and doesnt get stuck.

Plus the stainless steel have less failure rate (getting stuck when removing it from the head.)

votozone rental are hit or miss, worse when we tried it and the hose where the hose meets the fitting snapped and it go stuck in the head.

I didn't notice any leaks when I was doing mine. And it helped pressure for about 30 seconds or more while I was writing stuff down. if I could get a better one for free from AutoZone I'll probably try that but it's going to be a little while.

I’m guessing a compression tester isn’t something you want to cheap out on.

Update: Big Turbo Leaning and me

I am still working on the tuning process. I am learning a lot about Big Turbo characteristics that I "knew" before but never really saw or felt in real life. One issue I have ran into that I never thought about before is how this turbo "loads up". For anyone who is like me and never really thought about it in practical terms here is how bigger turbos work. I am running the PTE 5862 JB

    1. 3k rpm Go WOT - 4th gear
    2. Nothing happens but the pedal is to the floor and the motor is trying to do something.
    3. The turbo is waking up and is going from sleepy time to fucking party time.
    4. You can feel the motor working to get past the turbo and put the power down "it's like going up hill in too high of a gear"
    5. Now the turbo is awake and since it was getting loaded up it is fucking ready to party and the motor is also ready to party.
    6. BUT if you say give me 100% wgdc you just asked the turbo go full wild and now you made a mistake.
    7. Since starting this turbo is more like a train and less like a smart car you are now asking this train to slow down and you know how well trains slow down
The moral of this story is that I can not tune this turbo like a smaller turbo. I can not ask it for 100% wgdc when I mat it because if I do it will load up and the blow past my target load and boost and there will not be enough time to bring it back down to 35% wgdc before it hits my limiters. Yes, you could tune around all that and let it go wild but I want the transitions to be smooth and controllable and right now it is not doing that.

This has been a learning experience for me and I am hoping the logs today are better as I have adjusted WGDC to work better with how this turbo responds. Will keep everyone updated.

On another note I tested my SS controller to make sure I was not sold a brick and it seems to be working. So eventually I will get a pump and lines and get that bad boy going.

I also did a SWAS switch as I thought it might be giving me trouble down the road. If anyone else plans to do this you can cut the yellow/blue stripe wire and use a switch open and close that circuit. This way I don't have to have it off all the time unless I want to.

This was me testing for the hot wire and the yellow/blue stripe is what gives that sensor power.

You get this light when SWAS is turned off. Which is preparing you for how you will be driving. If you turn SWAS off but turn the button back on SWAS will not turn back on until the car is restarted.

I also got my fire extinguisher installed. Thanks @Maisonvi for the hardware.

Thread on it. I will be looking at getting those bolts at some point but how it's setup now works.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was picking up on these characteristics.

I had a lot of your same issues when Rob was tuning my S4. Right now I'm at a happy spot power wise, still have to install my aquamist kit. But anyway...

You have a very different set up than mine, and obviously are shooting for way more power with your PI. But there will get to a point where the engine will be tuned and happy, and you may find yourself changing some of your suspension or even power components to accommodate the squat and thrust that you will experience with all the new power.

No, it doesnt stop with finishing the tune. You will be fiddling with the car for a while afterward too. Enjoy the continued hobby. :)

    Couple of things:

    1. Versatune can turn off the swas fully already so you don't really need the switch
    2. Your boost issues are why you do a spring pressure only pull (logged) along with a couple of flat WGDC pulls (20%, 40%, etc) so you can build a forced WGDC map that spools earlier, hits your targets without overshooting and does it safely. This should be in your notes. ;)

lol Yes, I do know that but everything I was reading about was how lazy these turbos can be and how people set it to 100 to get them going and that is not at all what I need. Which I am now seeing IRL. I was reading up on SWAS for VT and no one could confirm that it fully worked to prevent it so I decided to install the switch. I had not had any problems before when I was on CS turbo and 375/375 but this is a different animal. Hoping to get some logs today to see if the transition is working the way I want and it can hold targets.

Well I dunno about 07s but I had my 09 sliding through a turn (induced) a bit the other day and it didn't pull power. You do still have to hit the DSC button.

    Update:

I have been working on tuning the car and was having some issues with "blow out" I guess. It didn't feel like or sound like blow out but either way it was cutting out as soon as boost built and load got to target. For a while I thought maybe I was going over target load so I played with the tune. After much trial and error the issues did not go away. It was pretty hard to see in the logs as they looked normal but it was def not driving normal.

@alexwlwsn and @Sho suggested I do new plugs and @CMajor suggested I stretch the coil springs. I did this and BOOM problem solved. Car runs better then ever. I think it was a misfire as I also noticed that he car did sound strange when cruising but it didn't feel off. I thought it might be the CPE manifold and that is just how it sounds as new parts new sounds but it was def a misfire looking back at it.

So now I just need to get a decent 4th gear log and I can add some more boost. No idea when I will get that.

Last night I had some time in the garage so I decided to clean up my split second controller injector plugs. Two of the plugs were fairly corroded so I bought some new ends and made them look pretty.

I am still on the fence with the fuel setup I want to do. I am leaning toward the hellcat pump with a return. @Maisonvi said he could do some magic and make a bracket to hold it so that is probably what I will do. Won't be running that setup until spring as it will be winter tire weather here soon and I have other stuff on my plate.

    Sad Update:

My brother Dylan and his wife Michelle were due to have their baby in two weeks. His heart stopped and they ended up having a stillbirth.

    Obituary

"Everett John Mulfinger was born at 5:50 A.M. He had all the cute things a baby should have. He had brown hair to match his dad. He came out easy because he loved his mom. His first hat had dinosaurs because he probably would have loved them. Everett is in heaven now with two other Mulfinger babies. Everett would have been a proud Mulfinger. His parents are already proud of him."

I was able to leave work and visit them and spend time with everyone. It was great to see the family but a very heavy and shitty situation. Mazdaspeed community was very supportive and sent flowers. I am very thankful for that and I know it meant a lot to my brother who is also into cars and has a focus st. Thank you everyone.

    Update:

It's getting colder out so I decided to swap my winters on, simple enough. Well no and fuck me. Passenger side tire is worn to the cord and driver side is getting there. These tires have two pretty easy summers on them so yeah.... I for sure need an alignment but also could see them rubbing inside the wheel well. My car sits pretty low on the Megan Racing coils which I never adjusted from the previous owner. So I decided I better adjust them and get some height going before I get an alignment. Well that was a bad decision.

I have never adjusted coil overs before and did not know what was in store. Turns out it is really easy "if everything isn't seized up" I was able to get the driver side unseized and adjusted. I added an inch to it and then made sure the spring seat was also correct. I emailed Megan about the specs and they got back to me in less than two hours which was great.

"The front coilover can be measured for our out of box setting from the top of the top hat, to the lower bracket mounting seat. On the lower bracket, there is raised seat where the knuckle will indicated it's been installed all the way. This measurement is 420mm. The spring pre-load will be 2mm compression. On the 170mm spring, the total spring length will then be 168mm (not including spring seats or cushions). Please let me know if you have any other questions."

The passenger side has been a fucking nightmare. I was able to get the rings loose but was not able to spin it in the shock tube to raise the height. I ended up getting all three rings together then having to put a pipe wrench on it and a LONG extension. I was able to break it loose this way and could now adjust height.

I was not really concerned about eating up the rings with the pipe wrench as if I ever need to do this again I will just get new suspension and I don't care how it looks as long as it works. Well now the tube was loose and I could raise it up. BUT the rings are now all seized together. I tried a bunch of methods to break them apart to no avail.

Luckily I have a spare strut so I decided to just tear this old one down. Leave the rings on it. Buy new rings and transfer all the parts to the new piece.

When the rings come I should be back in business. 35$ is a lot less then a whole new setup. I have the front raised about 1" from where it was and I will adjust the back when I can, it was already higher but I am sure needs some touching up. This was a pain in the ass. If the coils were not seized it would have been like 30 min to do all this. Megan Racing has been very responsive and helpful so that is nice. If this turns into a total failure I will likely look at doing a spring and shock setup that is more DD friendly that I never have to touch. I have been happy with how these coils handle for the price and the ride is not horrible but it is a little too fancy for what I actually need and do with the car.
