Or if they come out with an arch to them, or the other ringlands are toast too.

Definitely the next step. With compression at 150 on cylinders 1 and 4, I'll be able to compare the ring gaps to 2 and 3. As long as they are measurable.

At this point, it's unclear if Jordan wants to be present for pulling and disassembly of the motor. I'm giving him a little more time, given the holidays. He said he returns to his shop on Monday, the 4th. Whatever that means.

More interested in the ringlands than the rings myself.

Just photos is fine, anything that looks out of place or damaged *other* than the piston crowns (but you should have clear pics of that damage, too).

After more conversation, I at least got Jordan to admit he'll warranty the engine if a fault is found. He won't be present for the teardown in a couple weeks. The plan is to pull the motor and document everything. Then send the block assembled to a couple engine shops here in SD. I'll need their opinion on the matter documented as well.

He wants you to send it to multiple shops? At least he will consider a warranty if a mechanical failure was found.

He doesn't want me to, but I I'm doing it to prove it out and have it documented.

I think you may find that they are going to say that damage is due to detonation and the tune. I hope it was just bad parts and a regular mechanical failure.

I showed the images of your pistons to a few people I know and a guy with a turbo civic had the same exact failure due to detonation from his tune. Pistons cracked at the top just like yours.

Either way I hope this works out for you and he can do something to help you out.

I don't see it being tune related as he is not self tuning or using some rando. I could see there being an issue with the timing tooth slipping which could throw the motor out of time causing detonation. This would be mechanical but not per say the builders fault. I am interested to see what the tear down looks like for sure but I would inspect the crank pulley as well to see if it is still where it should be. When you start spinning these motors high that seems to be an issue.

This is one reason I have an underdrive pulley on my alternator.

I really don't see it being tune related also. Will knows what he's doing and I'm not about to bark up his tree. He has been my tuner for awhile now through all the different setups I have had.

Crank pulley was confirmed where it should be. Timing didn't slip. This was one of the first things I confirmed. Counted 20 teeth to the CPS sensor CCW from space on crank pulley at TDC.

Call me crazy, but here's the plan. Me and a couple buddies will be pulling the motor next weekend and stripping it down to block and head. I'll be immediately shipping it back to Jordan in New Orleans. I'll be following the motor and catching a flight to be present for the teardown. A weekend in New Orleans and being present for the teardown is cheaper than getting a couple shops opinions here in San Diego.

I brought up the topic to Jordan about the amount of partial throttle KR I have experienced since day 1. It was not the typical phantom KR I was used to seeing with my stock motor. It would frequently shoot up to 8KR and could be modulated and controlled with throttle input. The problem here is it was always a mechanical noise I could hear from the engine when it occurred. It wasn't the knock sensor just picking up engine bay noise.

I'm sure I can pull up videos of it happening, before I floored it from all the wot videos I have with a mic in the engine bay. Of course when I approached both Jordan and my tuner about this back in April, I got the usual KR only matters at WOT lecture. I also later assumed the balance shaft delete and lightened flywheel had something to do with it so I stopped obsessing over it and moved on.

Dont strip the engine down if you're shipping it to him. Just send him the motor as is and be there for when he tears it down. It will save you time. Unless you have a video camera document every step and you put every single component in a labeled bag viewed on the camera. That way he cant say it wasnt like this or that etc.

Also when I said they would say it's detonation that wasnt my opinion of what caused the failure. Just stating that it is most likely what will be said as the source of failure if they cant see any other option. Best of luck dude

Thanks for the tip. More than likely he'll want it how it was shipped to me. Block, head, and timed. I'll strip it down to that extent. No use sending anything else with it for me to have to pay to have him ship back.

Interested in this comment from you Enki.
Why run an underdrive pulley on the alternator, again? And where did you find one?

Well for one, I don't exactly have a stock alternator. For two, I spin to 8200. Pulleys are pulleys, I got it from Jegs or Summit if memory serves.
