I've got someone on board who is one of our more established tuners to help me tune it. I could probably get it to a fair point but some of the tables are very foreign to me and that's where I'm not comfortable pushing past. I'll use the dyno at Redline here in Arlington when that time comes.

In other news, changed the oil today. Took 7 quarts, so they did the bsd install despite our conversation otherwise (in all fairness I did provide a bsd kit for it). The good news? The bottom half is balanced well enough that I can't / couldn't tell. Vibration is no more what it was stock, perhaps even a little less. Installed my oil pressure gauge, too. So fat I am very happy with that. Gets about 45psi at warm idle, 60ish under throttle.

*ninja edit: idle oil pressure is closer to 25 after a good trip around town, and she gets upward of 80psi if I'm really leaning on it.

oh yeah, took a sample of the oil to send to Blackstone just to see what they say. Probably a horror story being break in oil from a brand new motor but it'll be newt to see how it cleans up.

I was talked into a BSD as well but in retrospect I would've left it in. Car was much louder/buzzy with the BSD. I don't know what builder's obsession with BSD's is.

Its way easier to do a BSD then to try and fit it back in correctly.

^ 100% correct. The kid who built my motor didn't shim the balance shaft when reinstalling. The vibes actually were worse with it in, than deleted.

Looking forward to the tuning results. Considering the history of Mazdaspeed3 rebuilds in DFW, glad to see it worked out well for you.

Not that there haven't been challenges. Several things I had to clean up on my own that they presented as bigger problems than they were (and completely dead wrong in their diagnosis). But regarding the actual build quality...so far so good. She's seen 7Krpm a couple of times now and everything seems to be doing fine. Now that I'm turning the wick up on the tune a bit I'm installing the Guardian Angel today just in case.

Don't forget about cool down periods between logs ;)

One log per day. It'll take seven months to get it tuned but it'll be good for the engine.

    So, the latest...

I said I was going to have some help from one of our established tuners. Didn't happen. Rather than sit on my ass, I set out to familiarize myself with the software and started tuning it my damn self. A couple of steps in the learning curve and a cautious approached has me sitting right under 400whp, mafcal is perfect and scaled for methanol, and only at 19psi or so. I'll start upping the load targets and bringing up boost until either (a) I hit my goal or (b) I run out of fuel. I should hit 460whp around 28psi. Load tuning was aggravating and foreign at first, seeming ridiculous and tedious to get anywhere but now that I am familiar with the process I see the value in it. Not to mention the pride in doing it myself. It's pretty quick already, easily handling a feisty M4 earlier (they're not very fast but I'm also hardly turned up the wick, too). I've got about a thousand miles on the motor now and she seems to be holding together like a champ.

It's funny how people turn into a totally different person when they get behind the wheel.

I'm really just a potty mouth behind the wheel. It entertains me and helps me vent, but I would never go so far as to actually rage out.

My wife is the same. When she's just a passenger, she's usually pretty calm. But when she is driving, she can be extra chatty especially if someone cuts her off or is driving slow in front of her LOL.

Vdyno has since given me 440, 444, 471, and 457. Vdyno is by no means
gospel but the logs imply 440 is in the ballpark. I've got some minor tweaking to do then I'll get her on the rollers. I'm admittedly proud of myself for the way it's running. Very smooth and mild mannered while part throttle, turns into a fire breathing beast of fury at wot and still what could be considered a moderate tune, even mild considering the forged motor and head work (not ported, just new valve seats, guides, springs, etc)

Sounds good! Sorry, maybe I missed it in a earlier post. What are you using to tune? Accessport? Versatune?

Versatune. I had some grumblings about the software at first but they were really just my own shortcomings in experience with load tuning. Now that I have some time under my belt with it I have come to appreciate what it brings to the table.

For future reference the balance shaft is for harmonic balance which is bad for a four cylinder and gets worse as the displacement increases. Balancing the engine is different and the stock rotating assembly is reasonably balanced from the factory.

Balance shaft, harmonic balancer, damper assembly....all the same thing by different names. Of course it's not intended to physically balance the engine. Its job is to dampen harmonic vibrations (oscillation, to be technical). Plenty of people have made mention of the vibrations in their car being near intolerable when they removed the assembly. The better the rotating assembly is balanced the less it will oscillate. Inline 4 cylinder assemblies are just naturally inclined to have resonance. No matter what we do we're not fixing it, just hiding it :)

Wound it up to 489/547 (yeah, you read correctly). Definitely, definitely zero intention of staying there. Power curve was peaky and dropped off shortly after it peaked. Immediately dialed it back to a much more usable 447/475 with much more area under the curve. Still have some work to do after i get the ST mani on but now I know what it's capable of.

    Oh, and I did a thing: 22119882_1957660677845305_608590869_o.jpg
The shop power washed the engine parts during the build and blasted off 60% of the sweet red paint so I redid it in burnt copper.
