I make over 350 whp on the ets tmic with a Corksport turbo (which is less efficient than the turbos Vash has used) and e30. The stock downpipe appears to be the bottleneck at this point.

Justin @ freektune said his highest hp k04 cars used a tmic in a q&a the other day.

Dale Gribble did a little comparison of tmic and fmic on MSF http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f505/ets-top-mount-intercooler-v-cp-e-194456/

as everyone else said, it's really up to you and your goals/preferences. Compromises are made either way. But good TMIC's really aren't bad

Appreciate you all offering different perspectives. I should probably have considered both regardless but was easily caught up in the FMIC only hype. More research to be done.

Nice...I'll take a look! It seems, from what I have read, that most of the TMIC mentioned (ETS, CPE, CS) are, although not identical and probably not necessarily equal, probably at least comparable. Especially if the money is right. :)

Im late to the party it seems. I have the jbr underoute pipeing and i had a tr6 then upgraded to a tr8. The under route pipe along with a FMIC is awesome. TR6 fits like a glove no cutting. I dont have to take the IC off or fuck with pipeing everytime i want to work on the top of my motor. That alone was worth it. No heat soak and short pipe runs are awesome. If you dont mind clocking the turbo i would go with a TR6 with a jbr underoute pipe setup. Then you will want a nice poweder coated valve cover and drool everytime you open your hood.

The CS is a bit smaller but its perfectly fine for the K04. It may or may not be the best for a bigger turbo. So yeah of the money is right, its better than nothing and used ic's seem to sell well

i actually think the under-routing piping is a cool idea. i found a few vids (they are hard to come by) noting that the fit of the piping wasn't perfect and did rub (or come super close) on a few things. then i saw another video of a spool up with jbr hoses (not sure the size of turbo...they only showed the piping coming out of the IC) and you could see it puff up like a balloon. perhaps that's not a huge deal as long as it can handle the pressures.

the more i'm reading the more i am looking at a TMIC. mostly for convenience, a bit for price, and the fact that the pu's can really take advantage of the cowl. i'll just need to ensure i'm not running against someone after a long sit in hot temps.

however, good to know that it's working as designed. i like jbr's stuff.

I bought my TR6 used for 150 and the underoute kit used for 120 so it was the same price as a used TMIC. ETS makes the best TMIC for the money IMO. Thats the one i had. I would think about future goals thou. If i know i would be going BT i would of skipped the tmic and went straight for the FMIC setup. If i were to go back and do it all over again it would be crash bar and tr11 and be done with it.

As far as silicone puffing up i woudnt think about that for a second. The amount of air saved in pipeing volume by going underoute vs standard fmic runs is huge compared to any silicone puff. You would be hard pressed to find any spooling differance in a log silicone vs hard pipe.

The expanding pipes just made me think what would happen is one of em blew. Silicon is pretty tough when layered. I get that. I know couplers are typically silicone as well so other kits aren’t immune. It just looked like a balloon. Granted, I couldn’t tell by any means how much boost was being produced at the time. My guess is there’d be push back by now if it was a major problem.

I believe that it was also Dale that did some testing showing that a FMIC isnt really better than TMIC unless you take the time to fix all of the ductwork around the radiator and FMIC to make sure that air is actually going through it.

It was nice having an active member that lived in a place where the weather was the same all the time and was willing to experiment for the greater good. Anyone know what happened to him?

I used to enjoy reading his threads also. The meth injection threads were great.

He sold his ms6 to a mechanic friend he trusted and bought a Toyota truck.

    Much sadness...

I don't get it. As old as that car was it couldn't have been worth much. Could have kept it
