So in my quest to try and figure out why my car isn't taking gas at the pump, I decided to start with the so called evap filter.

First step is just to Jack up the passenger side rear. As seen in the picture, it is supposed to be attached to the filler neck and mine was zip tied.

Once you remove it from the filler neck, pull the entire assembly out the bottom where you can remove the cap. As seen in the picture, all you need is a flathead screwdriver. The cap simply locks onto the body and just work it from one side all around.

Once cap is off, there's the filter. Mine was so old, it crumbled and fell apart. For now, I removed it and reinstalled the assembly. After trying to fill up, same problem. Grrr.

Anyways, pretty simple procedure. Worth checking out if you have evap problems.

Nice writeup! Can you get a clearer pic of the location? Also what part number and year is your Speed?

I'll try and get a better picture but it's just under the gas filler door inside the right rear fender well. If you Jack up that side and look up, you'll see the filler neck piping and the filter is attached to it. Very easy to spot.

It's a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3. I believe the 2nd gens have one and maybe the mazdaspeed 6 as well. Since my state doesn't have emissions, I'm not going to bother buying a new filter so not sure what the part number is. May end up being an expensive dealer only part.

I had originally assumed that number was the part number of the entire filter housing, filter, and pipe assembly. It looked like the plastic evap hose was part of the filter assembly and can't be disconnected. I also assumed that the internal filter was replaceable separate from buying a new assembly

But I just checked rockauto and advance auto parts websites and can't find any replacement filters. So either the filter is a dealer only item, or you must buy the entire filter assembly.

I will remove my filter assembly again and get that part number off and update this thread. Will be a few days...
