So my 2010 is starting to show signs of what I have come to read is a fairly common issue; the second gear synchro is grumbling a little bit. Goes into gear just fine, no grinding, but it does on occasion pop out of gear if I`m decelerating, and only in 2nd. I have extended warranty on it, and they already said it is covered so no worries there. My inquiry is this: was there a particular upgrade Mazda may have done to the tranny internals that came along after the 2010 model? I understand the 1st gen had a wicked problem with this, just wondering when it may have been addressed. And if there was an upgrade, is it just better synchros, or is there a new gear/shaft assembly?

Are you sure this is synchros and not just the plastic pads on the shift forks? Those wear out and cause it to pop out of gear as well. You can get forks with brass pads from SP63 for a chunk of money and your old forks.

Nope, not sure. Given that it doesn`t grind at all, ever, it may well be the fork pads. I`ll have a look-see at those with the brass pads. I`m not out any more money either way but i`d sure like the correct thing to get fixed while I still have warranty.

I'm not sure how keen Mazda would be on buying/installing those for you, but it's worth a shot.

3rd party warranty company. If the shop determines that`s the problem they`ll cover it. I just don`t really have the 3 weeks to wait. Might just order them on my own dime regardless. I like upgrades :)

I have the same issue! Hope it’s the forks and not worn synchros. Did you ever resolve this issue?

Solution was to swap in a brand new gen1 trans and send the gen2 to @JohnnyTightlips , who documented the complete rebuild of it in his build thread.

LOL, I was literally about to comment on this. Jef hooked me up with that old trans and it is now in my car. I did a complete tear down of it which you can find in my build thread. The pads were still in decent shape. One had a very slight sliver of a crack. The synchros were in ROUGH shape and same with 2nd gear. You can see the pics in my thread. It was not super hard to tear down the the trans but def time consuming and you need a press.
