I’m on the worlds shittiest winter tires in 235/45/17. The issue is more so having 0 modulation. The base map was brutal. 45% throttle nobody home. 46% throttle? Full boost.

It was 32f while out logging today.

I logged my first revision today,
    CD3E91AD-030F-48CE-82CC-554CF95B30A4.jpeg

It honestly feels better then it looks. That power curve is a little yuck compared to the built setup but it feels great. pulls hard and clean so I can’t complain TOO much. Also that road was a little uphill. I had such a tough time logging. I’d either get traffic, or light the tires at 5500rpm and just roast. The car is having issues hooking in every gear even on the dry pavement. Next logs I’ll go back to my usual logging road for better comparison between setups.

Gt3071r been on the car since 2016, it was rebuilt in 2016 but nothing since. Just full send and thing is still ridiculous. This is also on a reverse taper of course I have no doubt 20psi+ could be made within the same amount of rpm. Damn. It feels awesome

Captain KR tends to show no mercy with his toons. He's been tuning every setup on my car since 2012. Maybe send him some flowers first to warm him up lol

    This happened today. Dipstick popped.
    0B5BA1F4-41A3-492C-A997-ABCAEE8B1CA2.jpeg

Getting pretty over this car at this point. It really is a piece of shit.

went out as the roads were dry today to try and get some logs. Even went to my buddies and swapped on his good winter tires. Car was driving great felt good no issues. Did a few 4th gear logs and bam. Car was hitting what felt like boost cut at the top of 4th ~25psi. Car would hold 22 across the entire pull then just past 6400 it would start to creep up and yea. Fuck.

it’s -22f out here so it’s cold AF. Not sure if the combo of super cold air and little over boost was enough to pop the stick out but fuck this sucks. I sold my nice vented setup so that’s gone. This motor never needed venting but I also never drove it below 0 degrees.

just when I thought I decided to keep this thing…what a let down.

Damn that sucks dude is that oil of coolant? It's hard to tell, everything just looks wet. Did something crack or just have a line break off?

Is your catch can vented? Could be a simple enough fix for the next time you log at fricken -22 deg F...

My catch can isn’t vented no. I have 0 venting. I ordered a oil cap breather thing so lll give that a go sure but my confidence is definitely down on the car. This motor never needed venting before. Hopefully it was the cold that did it. It’s never seen winter before

You mentioned a few posts above about how ridiculous the map was (400 rpm delta to 18 PSI pressure). Could simply be that you are finding a new limit to your setup via the new mapping and weather.

Guess what I am saying is dont get too dejected. Its all part of the process of building and tuning a car.

Because -30C/-22F is commonplace in this part of the world, not far from OP and even tho I park my Speed6 for the salty season, I still put a trouble light with a 40W bulb beside the OCC(non vented) to keep the can and lines from freezing up while parked in my garage. I periodically pull the car out and run it while I pull something else in to work on. One year I had a frozen OCC line and that caused my ailing K04 to shit out its seals and fill the intake and exhaust with oil. Glad I happen to look outside before severe damage was done but the oil was so low it didnt read on the dipstick. Since revamping the lines for better slope and using the trouble light I havent had any issues.

It has been cold as balls lately!!

    Edit: forgot to add quote

I’m hoping it’s a combination of cold and the fact I’ve never driven the car below 0 has masked that issue. Now with the super cold weather and no venting maybe that’s all it is.

I have ordered the vented oil cap. I’ve also reached out to Matt over at damond motorsports regarding a VTA kit for my single catch can.

do y’all know if I can vent the can that’s between my PCV and my IM? With a check valve on the vent it should be no issue yea?

I talked with Matt @ Damond on Friday and he said it was totally fine, that's what I just switched to.

Nice. I just ordered my budget venting setup so hopefully it arrives this week and I can get back to logging/driving this thing. It was a nice day today much warmer but I still didn’t trust it.

Added my vent to my catch can. Still waiting on the oil cap breather but I went out logging lastnight and the car was great…did fresh plugs cleaned the maf sensor out real good. Loaded my new map and away I went.

I have listed it forsale on all platforms. Unfortunately the time has come. I no longer have the confidence in the car I once had and I have another build I’m focusing on so I cant just have cash ready for when the Mazda needs a motor again or who knows.

I don’t enjoy driving the car anymore. I went out for about 1.5 hour drive lastnight and the entire time the car behaved but I was a nervous wreck. “Is it gonna explode now? Is my clutch gonna go? How’s my oil pressure??? Any KR while I’m boosting????”. It’s just nerve racking. I use to rip this car every single day on the back roads for hours all summer long since 2016. Not to mention how many track days this thing has done.

I’ll miss it but it’s standing directly in the way of my next build. If I had the space and the extra cash maybe I’d keep it.

that’s about it for this thing. Hopefully it goes to someone like me. Someone who cares and gives a fuck to keep the car clean and build it further.
