I actually found one that runs off of your phone's charging port at walmart. I haven't went and got it but maybe worth a shot. Problem with just tightening the crank bolt and spinning is that if it IS out of time then it is obviously going to hit a valve bent or not. I need to probably make sure it is in time before turning it over by hand.

Just need to figure out how to go about it correctly with my timing cover on. Makes it hard to spin the crank to keep it against the timing pin.

 

It's entirely possible the clutch disk is glassed or the pressure plate just doesn't bite at all anymore. That would do it too.

 

That would probably explain why the gears grabbed while the motor was off but not under load. Just seems too coincidental That my crank bolt was loose too. One can hope lol

 

Turn the engine by hand. Also I doubt you can bend a valve or hit a piston. I don’t think you have more torque than an engine can produce lol. If it stops turning then that’s a problem.

 

You can also roll the car forward and backwards on neutral, that will give you an idea if the transmission is good. If it rolls then transmission is fine.

 

I'm just saying if the crank bolt isn't tight then the motor is most likely out of time. If that is the case spinning it by hand won't tell me anything really as it will hit valves since it isn't timed. I wasn't worried about bending valves turning it by hand I just am saying it won't tell me if valves are bent unless it IS in the CORRECT timing and gets stopped by something lol

Agreed and no not yet. I am doing some side hustle in my garage to get some money flowing while I'm laid off and so the car is outside in a couple inches of snow. I'll update as soon as I get time to look at it though thanks for asking Casey.

 

Dang..... I feel like I just watched a movie lmao. Well StreetSpeed, I will say I admire your dedication. You want that thing alive. If you say you felt it slip before in the past, when you were racing the Stang, you might have burned that clutch up if it slipped under heavy load and kept spinning. The crank bolt flying out is definitely a concern. Do you have a stock crank and bearings.? And did the harmonic balancer stay on when the bolt came out.?

 

So the crank bolt was still on and everything when I checked it out at home. Just went to turn the motor over by hand and it was finger tight basically lol Crank pulley was still on obviously since the bolt wasn't off. Bearings are full blown race mode with Clevite bearings but stock crank. Engine is FULLY built. Ported head, bigger valves, bigger valve springs, forged 2618 pistons with forged rods, L19 head studs, arp main studs. All the goods lol

 

Well pull that bolt and put like literally 2 drops of some locktite on the first few threads, and torque it, sounds like you got lucky on the engine side. What about all the oil and everything.? Didn't blow up your transfer case did you.? Also easy way to tell if your clutch is gone is pull the starter.

 

I might have but only time will tell.. I know you're new to the platform but the only thing that keeps our motor in time is a few little '"friction washers" on the crank and one on each cam. Once that dumb bolt is loose you have to pull all the timing components, get at the very least new friction washers for the crank and probably cams, clean surfaces to ultra clean perfection, and then install the washers without touching the face of them at all with anything lol. I'm a slower mechanic but it took me a total of like 14 hours to do mine with my motor in my car between 2 days.

 

Interesting, I was actually wondering what those were when I was considering buying a timing kit.. So once the bolt is torqued down with that friction washer, it's basically locked in place. But if the washer loses it's friction, it could slip and you would be out of time.?

 

Exactly lol Once that bolt is tightened it is good but if it comes loose or you take it off then the washers are considered no good and timing needs to be redone.

 

So going forward with my plans to fix my car I have come up with a wonderful not so cheap list to get it back on track other than what I screwed up lol

-- Street series twin disc full faced xclutch

-- Motor mounts (whether custom or DM is to be determined)

-- do PI setup

-- Rear diff mount from DM

If I can talk my wife into it maybe even some new shoes for her as I am sick of my leaking chrome wheels. Probably some other things as well like mainly cleaning engine bay up really well. Anyone who knows someone with parts feel free to hit me up!!

 

Step one and two completed on this long journey I hope to accomplish by early summer!

Hello new 2 ton HF engine hoist!

This thing is no joke lol Honestly seems like good quality for the most part and happy with it at least from a quality standpoint. Paint was so thick that the paint got messed up where it folds at the bottom, so that is my only complaint assembling it pretty much.

Time to test it out!!

 

Nice. Use mine for any lifting jobs as needed. Never realized how much I needed for other than engines.
Double check hydraulic fluid. HBF gives a small notice, but HBF uses a small amount of hydraulic fluid for shipping and I've returned a ram because of low fluid (my fault)

 

I'll definitely check into that, good point! Would suck to find out when getting ready to pick the motor that it didn't have enough lol
