Hey guys, I have a question for you. I have a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 that had a motor that pistons hit the valves. This is what I have done.
First of all I purchased a motor from a salvage yard gen2, put it in and in less tha 300kms piston 1 suffered a cracked piston. So down 3k on a engine. Still had the original engine.
So I pulled the engine again pulled off the head of the gen 2 motor and took it to the machine shop for a rebuild. I took both heads gen1 and gen2 to the shop and they chose the gen2 since there was no bent valves. I got the injectors serviced while the head was being serviced. So got all the parts head gasket, bolts,Vvt, chain, tensioner to put everything back together on the gen1 block.
When I installed the rebuild head on the gen1 block everything went smoothly, I put the gen2 valve cover on, as well as the spin on oil filter new pvc filter. Put it back in the car started up right away and sounds great.
The issue that I have is that the car is going through oil, but it is not burning blue out of the exhaust.
The car is not smoking white out of the exhaust either.
When driving the the car it is blowing black smoke for the exhaust. I know that that is normal but when i had my son follow me he said it was puffing black at every shift and when I give it throttle it will blow black.
It is all stock other then hpfp internals, air intake and a access port. So basically no mods.
    At helping is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks everyone,
    Cheers

How many miles since assembly, how much oil is it going through.

A little smoke is normal but really only at full throttle

    Approximately 700 miles since assembly.
    About 1qt per 200 miles

The picture of the engine is of the cracked piston. If looking close I have it at top dead Center and it is sitt lower than piston 4. That is the gen2 motor

Did you have that Gen1 block examined before using it? Are you sure there weren’t other issues with it? 1qt every 200 miles is pretty bad :)

Just out of curiosity, why didn’t you replace the cracked piston on the Gen2 block and use that?

I did not replace the piston because of time. I had the gen 1 motor so I just that bottom end put the rebuild head on it and have intentions of getting the gen 2 block rebuilt when have time. I have to still do a complete leak down and compression test also check into the turbo to see if oil is present. I was so excited to get it together and brought back to life and enjoy the car. It is great!!

In cylinder number 1 with the cracked piston was sitting low in the cylinder so I assume that the bearings have spun. I do not know the situation of the crank but I know there is no hole in the block. Lol I just have not had time to investigate.
