So last Thursday on my way to work I was doing 75 in cruise control, got passed by a Z and started to accelerate. Started hearing a whirring noise and then a bang. Pulled to the side of the road to wait for the tow. Engine revs to 6.7k no problems, but nothings getting transferred to the wheels. Fast forward to Sunday and the techs find holes in my transmission. Took it apart today and apparently the guide rod for my spider gears sheared apart, blew out the sides of my diff and ran around the ring gear until it blew holes in the case. Has anyone had this problem before?

Woah dang......... Soo.. do you have a 6 too or what I'm confused since your profile pic and name is ms3? I have heard a quiet whirring noise from mine that goes away when I click my e-brake up on click which tells me it is the rear diff. I am going to put some good quality fluid in there and hope it goes away as I have honestly....well...never changed it lol I should've at least checked it but it seemed to be the one thing on my car for the last 50k miles that hasn't been leaking haha

Sorry for the confusion I have a 6 speed MS3. Hopefully it just needs fluid and doesn’t fail.

I honestly think you are the first car with less than 900 hp to break a transmission

Nah I replaced one on my buddies gen 1, 6 years ago, he was still stock turbo, he loved his drag nights at the track. He was driving in town going to work, started on a small incline from stop for a set of lights, pissed tranny fluid all over the road, old lady behind him lost traction couldn't move up the road.

Super weird. Any idea why it happens? Seems like it wouldn’t be a part that would fail on an engine only making around 320hp

Well the dude loved his hard launches are drag slicks, also flat foot shifted even when not at the track from time to time.

I don't recall too much but I have sent a message off to see if I can get some more information for you.

Seems weird the odd failure clearly happens but it's not the norm that's for sure as we've got a tell regarded trans.

Edit: reached out and suspicion is that the diff let go

I definitely have driven it hard from time to time, but I’ve never flat foot shifted, and I’ve only owned it for three months or so. I’ve gotten some good hard launches in but never thought it would cause the diff to go. Lmk if you find anything.

Lol! He was on MSF which I think is where we met, he usually hung around the local groups as we had a local ish forum dude actually introduced me to the NATOR way and got me started wrenching. Around the time MSO stood up his engine blew and he went radio silent
That's gotta count for something atleast

Alright so @Panda403 I heard back from one of the guys, he thinks the diff let go. Now we figure this gen1 trans had 500+ drag passes on slicks on it as the owner really loved his drag nights. So really didn't owe him anything.

You just got yours, so who knows what the PO did to that transmission
