Dyno tuned my car tonight. Meh.

Did 3 pulls on a mustang dyno tonight at a local dyno night. The results were a tad disappointing. Running a cobb ots v234 stage 2 91 tune I spit out 250whp and 267wtq. I know I need a pro tune, just figured with my mods, it would be a tad more. 2 damn near stock STs on ots tunes made 240/340... Maybe my mazda is broken lol.

Talk to some of the tuners and they can help you with what you want to achieve with your hp goals.

 

I gotta be honest, that's not bad for an ots map on 91 LOL. Definitely get yourself an hpfp and look in the tuner section.

You'll get much more power out of a pro tune or even a freektune ots+ map. Cobb maps are a good "safe" starting point, but not nearly as good a one that's custom for you

 

I know I need a real tune, But probably wont go full tune until I get more bolt ons. I don't really have a HP goal, I just want a fun DD. I just thought with the amount of mods I had, Id at least be at stock rated levels.

I have autotechs, along with a few other mods. I love the car, and its fun as hell to drive, Just thought id make bigger numbers is all.

I could see doing an OTS+ tune now and when I go bt, doing a full tune. I know the Cobb tunes are a good base but not the best, I just need to bite the bullet and get a more customized tune.

 

@B4RK3R; you have hpfp internals if you're running stage 2 right? The ots +map is well worth the money, I'm "stage 2" and I have an ots map from freektune and absolutely love it, I'll do a full tune when I upgrade intercooler and cbe but for now she pulls hard as fuck.

Truthfully those numbers are pretty spot on for an OTS map like everyone has said. I dunno how any of the tuners are about doing revisions for mods added after the initial tune but like you said you might as well just wait until you get everything on the car that you want. But with what you have any custom tune for your car is gonna yield more power that the OTS map

 

Most of the big tuners just charge a reasonable touch up fee depending on what's added.

Have any E85 handy? With your mods and E25-30, any of the reputable tuners can easily get you 300/350+ at the wheels with your mods.

Those ST's OTS maps must be much different. They have smaller engines than us, so I'll bet it's probably more of a function of COBB going out with the old/in with the new and taking a lot more time developing them. When I see that much torque on a canned tune, it makes me pucker, though. Especially with their tiny turbos. Hopefully their rods are stouter than ours, LOL. Their platform isn't nearly as vetted out. I'll bet they grenade some motors figuring things out. Just the name of the game, IMHO.

 

@B4RK3R the OTS tunes for the ST's are actually very nice. They are heads and shoulders above the quality of the OTS tune for us. SO keep that as a consolation. The OTS tune is very weak for us IMHO. It's more like a starter tune than anything.

 

Their stock rods are solid! My buddy had his ST fully bolted less manifolds and was making lots of torque >370, whp wasn't as good and the k03 fall on its face before the k04 does

They must be. Ford calibrates those cars to have a ton of low-end grunt. Some of our platform's peeps were trying to see what, if any, Ecoboost parts we may be able to use.

 

I unfortunately don't have access to E85. Closest station in in sc about 40 minutes away.
And funny that you say that, one of the st's did pop his motor, rebuilt it and is running the same tune and mods again. Its only a matter of time.

Ok that makes me feel a bit better. I'll just have to get my next few bolt ons and a big boy tune then.

Well, then, how do you feel about running methanol? That's the other solution to be able to run significant timing on these cars (besides race fuel, of course), and will enable you to hit that 300/350 easily. Some people run methanol in-tank. You could go about it like that, but I'd do some research on it first in terms of potential issues.

 

In all honesty, Id have to do a tad more research into Methanol before I could say either way, but from what I have heard, its the way to go if I'm serious about numbers and power. I pretty much got the OK from the fiancé to spend a good bit of money from our tax return on a BT build last night. Been looking into BNR3/4's and the GTX3071R's as potential. Of course it would have to be safe tuned as I don't have the funds yet for a built block.

Would I be safe to bet that a GT30 turbo with other supporting flow mods would be good for a safe 350/350 setup with a proper tune and without meth?

 

Depends on your local fuel quality. Some folks can hit 350/350 on premium with a GT30-sized turbo, a good-flowing setup, and good local fuel. I became knock-limited on 93 at ~330/350 with my BNR. It'd probably be a little higher if I was on a GT3071. TX 93 is known to not be too good. I run my ethanol tune 90+% of the time anyways.

 

I agree with above, 250 whp is about right....maybe even better than about right, I mean the only mods on there that would significantly impact your numbers are the intake, the flash tune, and the test pipe.... everything else is just helping put the power on the wheels and keeping the wheels on the ground....I had a similar setup on an 07 and I was getting just under that from my ghetto dyno...... I mean, that's 40!!!!! WHP for basically 2 power mods, intake and flash tune, I mean, did you do a stock dyno? It shouldn't have been putting out more than 210 ish..... so what is the problem here?

Just going through your mod list, accessport, adds about 15 for your setup, intake, 10-15 depending on other mods, TIP? not really helping without a bigger turbo or a DP, TMIC? only really helps with heatsoak, Internals? Basically just insurance from zoom zoom boom at your stage, BOV? helps your shifts, irrelevant for WHP, Test pipe +5-10WHP? again, depends on DP, NGKs meh, maybe some improvement, doubt it though, RSB? Keeps the car on the road, RMM? Helps with launch times and torque, but not peak HP, Springs and shocks? keeps the car on the road.

So over all, 15+ 15 + 10 + 5 (for the NGKs) = 45 WHP, and that's with some generous assumptions.
