I came across this and found it interesting. It always made sense to me that turbos with oil AND water in the CHRA would offer better longevity, but add complexity and cost. Seems Garrett wanted to offer some turbos more comparable to Precision's line, which is oil-only:

That article also made me even more sure that when the time comes, I'm going to go EFR over PTE. Part of the concept I'll be going after when I finally build and retire the Speed to weekend warrior duty will be longevity/reliability. That's part of the reason I'm very interested in 4032 alloy pistons. I'll probably add an oil cooler, perhaps a P/S cooler, and a larger radiator too.

It seems Garrett and Borg Warner agree that oil and water in the CHRA is the best layout toward this end; one can at least reasonably infer this by their various turbo designs, and also by the fact that our factory turbos were designed to have both too, for that matter.

How much do you actually drive your car?

I got roughly 50k hard miles out of my PTE 5858 before the seals let go and it started smoking. At 45k on my 5862 on my car, plus the 7k miles the previous owner put in it before selling me the turbo. I also have roughly 54k miles on my built motor with the 2618 material Manley platinum series 88mm pistons without an issue.

A lot. And longevity is very high on the priority list for me. That's why my build will include an oil/water CHRA (EFR7163), and oil cooler (if I can find a setup with a thermostat), an upgraded radiator, and 4032 pistons. PTE may be great for some, but I'd personally never run oil-only CHRAs. Same thing with 2618s. Same thing with my clutch selection, which will likely be a Southbend Stage 3 Endurance. Realistically, I want a rock-solid car that can track all day long and DD without any issues whatsoever which should easily be able to reach at least 100k miles of reliable service life on all these components, and hopefully more. It really all boils down to priorities.

The biggest wear items on my setup when I'm done with be rotors/pads/tires.

outside of lowest price and journal bearing option to let you rebuild it yourself for a lot less, i don't see why you would use them.
I would rather look into the new GTX gen2 models...but the price just get higher and higher and not sure if ATP will make us a bolt on package or not

I honestly don't get why more people don't run Borg Warner's S line stuff. It's stupid cheap and performs just as good (better) than the Garrett and PTE stuff. The cost of buying the turbo, and a manifold that gets you off the shit stock flange is the same price as an ATP turbo.

For me, personally, it's the lack of water in the CHRA. But if it's between this and a PTE, the choice seems clear: BW all the way.
