So, I had a bunch of issues that I thought might be fueling related (see: http://mazdaspeeds.org/index.php?threads/vashs-lean-knocky-story-time.3185/). I went ahead and ordered a new DeatschWerks 65c ITFP, fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, and fuel level sender to make sure everything was good with my 120k mile corny fuel system.

When I was using the nibbler to widen up my access hole for the fuel pump assembly, it got stuck and I had to yank it out. When I did, I pulled it out and knocked the damn nipple off of my fuel pump assembly. Fuck.

Got the rest of the access hole nibbled off and pulled the basket out. I decided that I might be able to find an assembly and swap the lid piece of it out, but it turns out that the fuel line that attaches the fuel pump housing to the actual fuel basket is either glued on or one piece, but either way it does not separate. At least not without me breaking some more shit.

A local pinged me and said that he had an assembly for a 2008.5 juan and that I could have it. The power plug looked the same and so did the nipple for the fuel line, so I was pumped! Apparently these parts have been superseded by a newer style pump that they use in the newer fancy 3s. The older style ones have a square looking power plug and the newer ones have more of an oval shape. Apparently he had some issues finding a new assembly when he swapped his and had to get a pigtail to adapt the square plug to the oval hole.

That being said, I had a new (to me) fuel pump assembly and it all looked very similar to my broken one at @batmsp6 's house. I got there and started swapping in my new pieces that I ordered from Mazda and DeatschWerks. I had to use the entire gen1 assembly since the lid wouldn't just swap over to my assembly. I could see 3 noticeable differences:

    1. The lid on the gen1 basket was definitely a larger circumference than the gen2 basket.
2.The fuel pump housing clips were in a different position than the gen2.
3.The bottom basket piece of the assembly was shaped a bit differently.

I tried getting my gen2 basket onto the gen1 assembly , but there is no way to fit the correct clips on the fuel pump housing to get it locked into place, so I ended up using the entire gen1 assembly with all of my new parts installed in it.

We test fitted the assembly in my fuel tank and it all fit well, but when we tried to bolt it down with the metal ring that holds it all in place, the larger circumference lid bit us in the ass. We broke out the dremel and took off about a quarter inch all the way around the lid and after that it fit right in and the ring fit over the top of it. The only problem with the ring fitment was, before there were 2 plastic pieces sticking out of the top of the lid that went into two cutouts on the ring to keep the assembly from rotating at all. We could only get one of the pieces lined up with the cutouts due to them being positioned differently. It seemed like it was in there pretty well, so I didn't stress it, but I might go back and super glue something on top of the lid just to give it a little extra support.

Got everything bolted back in and had to fill up my fuel tank before the level sender started working correctly. I'm still not sure if it's working properly yet. I've put about 80 miles on it so far and I've only gone down a little bit on my fuel gauge, so I'm counting miles right now to make sure it's telling me the correct levels.

If you guys have any questions on this let me know. I was trying to document this whole shit fiesta with pics, but it was getting late and I wanted to get shit done.

Just a follow up on this thread. The fuel level sender works great and is accurate. The shape changes on the Gen1 basket don't seem to effect the fuel level sender at all, so that's nice.
