Hello all, I come seeking some advice. Looking at possibly buying a speed3 hatchback, but the guy says timing slipped. How big of an issue is this? Is it pretty much guaranteed to need a full rebuild?

I'm new to these cars but I've been wrenching forever. TIA

Could have trashed valves & pistons or it could be fine after correcting the timing. Pretty sure you'd have to at least pull the head off to be sure in either case.

Yea that's kind of what I was thinking. I would have to get the car at a killer price to make it worthwhile.

I'd keep looking if its 06-09 myself without an inspection. But, maybe its wishful thinking but was the seller referring to the vvt? If you're close to the border, perhaps eye one up in Canada if the border reopens or is, our exchange is your advantage.
