While on my commute to work a week ago (6/21), I came to a stop at a stop light and watched as I slight mist of blue/white smoke started to catch up too me. After parking the car in a spot at work I let it idle for a bit and got no repeat situation, not even a hint of smoke. That night after work I let the car sit and idle for a bit, and after about 5 or 6 minutes it started white smoking a decent amount out the tailpipe, but not as bad as I'd seen some videos of blown turbos, where the car turns into a smoke machine on Halloween night. Figuring out the smell of the smoke exactly was difficult as the slight aroma of excess gas masked any underlying smells from the exhaust.

Assuming the worst I parked the car for the time being and started researching turbo replacements etc. Out of a mild curiosity I removed the intercooler and intake system all the way up too the turbo, just to see if anything was peculiar. Having found nothing super alarming, granted I'm not sure if anything would have stood out seeing as it had only produced blue/white smoke twice, I threw everything back together last night (6/28) taking precautions to ensure everything was situated and inserted the correct way. I started it up with no problems and let it sit and idle for a bit and then took it for a lap around the block. I parked it back up and let it sit again to see if it would puff again to no avail.

My worst suspicions would be blown turbo seals because I know the OEM ko4 is a piece of junk. But without being able to recreate the problem I'm sort of skeptical. I saw a little bit of information about smoking exhaust being caused by the PCV system being faulty, and the general consensus was the next steps would be a compression test, possibly a catch can, and a JBR or diamond restrictor bolt for the turbo feed along with a new PCV. I also understand the previously mentioned actions are sort of band aids for blown turbo seals, and the only true fix is a rebuild or an OEM (or better turbo). Having come to somewhat of a fork in the road, my general question would be am I on the right tracks, or could it possibly be something else entirely? I'm sort of taped out on my abilities and welcome exterior inputs.

My speed is sitting comfortable at about 180k miles, just on the edge of an oil change (In fact I have new oil and a filter sitting in my garage at home). I understand that at this mileage I'm probably coming up on some big ticket maintenance items. The car get's oil changes every 3-4 thousand miles, and in general I don't see any oil consumption over the oil interval. The most recent big maintenance items have been pivot shaft seal about 6 months ago and a brake fluid flush about 3 months ago. Coolant levels haven't fluctuated at all, and the car hasn't overheated even in the California heat.

Edit (6/29): I'm not seeing any CEL on the dash, and I'm 75% sure I'm not down on boost although I'll have to check later
