New member, just picked up a 2012 Speed 3 a few months ago. Just a bit of background- I learned stick maybe 10 years ago but this is my first manual that I have owned, so while I can certainly get around, I am still a noob.

The problem I am having is 2nd gear grinds with the clutch all the way in. Seems to be intermittent as it didn't do it during the test drive, because why would it? Since its intermittent like this I was thinking it could be the clutch and not the trans gear itself but the dealership wont do anything since its a wear part and I bought it used at 140k miles. The car looks like it was regularly maintained from the carfax, but it doesn't list a clutch replacement. I dont have any problems with any of the other gears and its not like I'm shifting improperly, but unless I disengage the clutch, shift, and hold the clutch disengaged for around 3-5 seconds while in 2nd before engaging the trans, it grinds SOMETIMES.

Anyone else have this happened? I've googled a bunch and searched this and a couple other forums and didn't see anyone with my exact problem.

Have your clutch hydraulic system bled. The grinding can happen if your fluid is old and is not pushing the clutch slave out enough.

Clutch plate itself could very well still be fine at that mileage. Start with flushing the fluid and inspecting your clutch pedal to make sure it's not cracked or bent.

The next bet would be replacing the slave cylinder

You're not going too light on the stick pressure are you? Maybe have another local give it a drive and see if they find anything wrong with it.

No, i use the same pressure on all the gears. Id say medium pressure. Its kinda hard to explain, but If i hold the shifter in neutral that 3-5 seconds with the clutch disengaged (clutch pedal to the floor) and start to put it in 2nd i can feel it grab, i put it all the way in gear, engage the clutch and it doesnt make any noise. The rest of the gears theres no problems. Then sometimes it will just go right into 2nd no problem. Maybe there is some air or something that bleeding it will help? Ill give it a shot and go from there.

Could be the synchros going to shit too. Prior owner could have abused it.

Once there was an OP with a shiny red balloon. All he wanted to do was let his balloon fly in the beautiful sky. Then one day a young man named Enki, was sporting his new slingshot. While looking for an iguana to shoot at, Enki could not find a target worth testing his new slingshot on. Until he saw a shiny red balloon through some trees...

It's only 2nd gear? Is it on decel only?

Have you checked the transmission fluid and changed it out? Checked shift cable adjustment? Checked the bolts for the clutch pedal bracket inside the interior?

Sorry for the late replies, I guess my notifications are off. I have inspected a few things and have just been taking it easier on 2nd gear. I have been going through the car since the dealership I bought it from did not service it despite telling me I couldn't pick it up because it was in service... hopefully they at least changed the oil. pedal and cable all seem fine with nothing noticeable. I haven't gone through the console yet to check in there so that's next. Will probably change the fluid too since that cant hurt but I doubt that's the problem since only 2nd gear is having the problem. Previous owner was definitely rough on the floor board so could have been rough on the clutch? Who knows. Regardless, thanks for the suggestions, I will start easy and keep digging if they dont fix it.
