I have searched on the mazdaspeed forums, and found that the vvt chain should be tight when the engine is warm. what about when the engine is cold?

All depends on how the engine falls. Even when its warm. Are you looking at a motor that is out of a vehicle?

It is also important to know if the engine is at TDC. It needs to be in order to really know. Generally, if you can see speed grooves on the valve cover, that is bad.

It's when you hear the sawing sound....That's how I knew. Went out fast too.
