Hi, I bought my 2009 mazdaspeed3 about 8 weeks ago, it ran when I bought it but needed a timing chain job. After doing the timing chain myself with my brother I am now unable to get the car started. After doing some troubleshooting we think we have nailed it down to a fuel issue. We are using forscan and a usb interface.

We are getting power to the pump and pressure to the HPFP, after a visual inspection the HPFP looks ok. We are only getting 68 PSI to the fuel rail but we aren't building any pressure. Any suggestions here?
The car isn't throwing any other codes.

    thanks!

Check your grounds first, and make sure you didn't miss any connectors when everything went back together. The small ground on top by the HPFP is commonly missed and will cause a no-start.

yeah we already double checked the grounds. The HPFP shows on the scanner, its just not building pressure at the fuel rail

68 psi is the pressure from the in tank pump and is what I would expect to see. The HPFP is driven by the cam. It can't build pressure until it's running. Is there another reason you suspect it's a fuel issue or just the 68 psi reading?

When we spray ether down the intake it coughs, so it looks like we have spark and compression but not fuel.

Ah, I see. Well you had the HPFP off to do the timing job, might as well give it a good once over to make sure nothing looks noticeably off on it. I can't recall hearing about anyone reinstalling the HPFP incorrectly in a way that would result in your set of circumstances though, but there's a first for everything. And while you're doing that, make sure that ground has a good connection on the bracket right there. And triple check all connectors. I know, you've already double checked everything, but it's often the simple things that are the cause in a scenario like this.

Also, you got the crank sensor plugged in and you lined it up with the 20th tooth on the pulley right? And just to double check, it hasn't been sitting for these past 8 weeks and this isn't simply a case of a run down battery with not quite enough juice to get it going?

This is the ground I'm talking about that's often missed:

Fresh battery, and I've had it on the trickle charger whenever we aren't working on it. Relatively certain it's in time as we have spark. It's weird because it ran before the timing job but now we cannot get it to go. Triple checked the grounds, we have power, we have spark, ether proves we have combustion. As far as we can tell it's got to be a fuel issue.

Is there a possibility that the follower in the HPFP that the cam lobe pushes against didn't find it's way back in when you reinstalled everything, or was put in backwards? That would definitely cause a fueling issue.
