New 4” intake

CorkSport has released a new 4” intake. Though they only specify it for the Mazdaspeed3, not the Mazdaspeed6. I have my battery relocated to the trunk, so I have a lot of room in the area where the intake goes. So, I suspect it should work in my 6. But I guess I want to find out for sure.

Was reading on fb that they simply haven't had an MS6 test mule in the shop to verify fitment, so they're currently listing it only for MS3 until it's been tested and confirmed. Chances are it ought to work but I don't know that anyone has attempted it yet.

Thanks for the info. Other intakes are often listed as being for 3 and 6, so that tells me that it should work. I will give CS a call.

Well I called CS. The guy said his name was Will. I asked about MS6 compatibility. He said it was his understanding that there is something about the 6 engine bay that makes it not compatible. But he said he didn’t know the detail. I asked him if he thought I could get it to work since I have relocated the battery. He said he didn’t know because he doesn’t know the specifics about the compatibility issue. That said, intakes usually work between the 3 and 6 so I’m tempted to buy it and try.

Maybe @CorkSport - Derrick can hook you up on some sorta quasi-beta tester deal where if you buy it and it doesn't work for MS6, they'll accept a return and full refund in exchange for your having confirmed/denied fitment.

Will said that if I bought it, it would be at my own risk, not returnable. I went ahead and ordered it figuring we could get it to work. What you said about them not having a test 6 didn’t make sense to me as I know they still make parts for the 6. I went looking on FB to find what you said. I did not find that. And in fact, I found a quote from CorkSport specifically saying it has been tested and will not fit. This was in the FB comments on their announcement of the product. Someone asked if it would fit the MS6. This was the response from CS:

“It will not. The speed 6 harness routing and coolant hose dont cooperate. “

So, CS specifically says they have tested it and it doesn’t work. But, that said, I don’t recall there being coolant hose in that area. I can’t go run look at the moment as the car is in the shop. From memory, I know there is the small coolant lines for the throttle body and the top radiator hose if they mean either of those. But I don’t have coolant going to my throttle body and I’m pretty sure the top radiator hose is out of the way. Now, I did modify the wiring harness a bit to make a bit more room to fit the 3.5” intake. So, I’m thinking that much can be handled. Probably. After all, other 4” intakes work.

I already turned in my order before finding that FB post. So, I will see if I can get it to work.

TBH it would be hella weird to me if it doesn't work, since every other intake out there is interchangeable between 6/3. Since you've got the battery moved already, maybe you could play with a longer coupler length to shift the intake further from the motor if that helps clearance?

I also tried to track down the post I'm remembering but I don't know which of the multiple groups it was in. I believe it was Brett who said it hadn't been officially tested but I'm not positive.

Wouldn’t a longer coupler make the wiring harness tighter? At any rate, I think probably it can work. So, I will see.

There is a coolant hose in the way of bigger intakes even on the 3s, but it's solved by grabbing some 5/8" heater hose, 8" plenty long and a hose Barb with some clamps and extending it for optimal fit.
Also I believe htp may make an intake for you if you email them...

I know you are being sarcastic. And I know there probably aren't a lot of MS6's on the road. But, there seems to be some. Whenever a part comes out for the 3, somebody says, "hey, what about for the 6?" Like on CS's FB page on the 4" intake, a couple of commenters besides myself inquired about 6 compatibility. And Maisonvi Shift Knobs has made 2 or 3 runs of their subframe bushings. So, there must still be some out there. And one more is coming back on the road soon!

I don't recall there being heater hose in the way, but, perhaps I'm not remembering. In any case, I told Kozmic to replace all the coolant hoses so presumably if there is a potential conflict they will make it long enough.

Probably I could get HTP to make one, true. But I already got the CS on order.

Yeah, you are right, I recall that hose. Yet, I don’t recall it being in the way. But if it is, we can handle it. Thanks for the picture.

I have personally always felt it more personal that messages responding to different people be in separate messages. But I guess most people prefer single post.

Oh, and it also doesn’t make sense if that is the hose they are saying is a problem for the 6 because it is the same on the 3. So, I’m still not understanding what they are saying about the coolant hose being an issue for the 6.

Coolant lines are so easy to extend, especially for anyone going balls deep enough into a build to require a 4" intake. Seems like a tad bit of laziness to just say "nah it won't fit bc coolant line lol" instead of "it fits with a coolant line extension;" particularly considering that a lot of dudes going 3.5" are already extending that stupid heater hose. I'm having trouble visualizing what kind of harness issue there could be, as well. I honestly don't think they've tested it.

Well, I don’t really know. I find it hard to believe they would specifically say it has those issues if they haven’t tested it. That doesn’t make any sense. But not working also doesn’t make any sense. Who knows. Well, I will find out.

I called yesterday and talked to someone named Will. He said that something about the 6 made it not fit but he didn’t know the details. And he said that if I wanted to order it, it would be at my own risk. I didn’t order it at that moment, but ordered it shortly afterwords via their site.

As to whether it is in stock, when you order on their site, I think it usually says out of stock if you try to order something not in stock. I think I’ve seen that on their site. I did check my order status and it still says shipment pending. My account says I have a Speed 6, so I’m wondering if they will call me to confirm the order before shipping it.

I went a round with Brett last week about how their website apparently doesn't do live inventory. You'll notice it says nothing about their manifolds being backordered and you can straight order one right now, but then they'll call you after the fact to let you know they're on indefinite backorder, "at least 2-3 months" per Brett. (and "up to 6 months" one guy was told). So I definitely wouldn't rely on that as an indicator of availability.
