mostly signed to look into a set of bumper brackets but might as well introduce my dumb ass too! I have 2013 that I affectionately call the MazDur I race in Global time attack as number 805 in the pursuit of seeing how much abuse it can take, i have broken a many a things... It was designed and built by BMSpec, but it is kinda of a cluster due not getting all the parts and having to Fab my own parts to mount it. It's bumper mounted (GTA rulez) Someone claims they hit 150 no problem but I can't get over 85 without it trying to rip off the bumper. The complete lack of install documentation and having to beg to get reference install pics makes for a poor experience, which is a shame because the design does work well.
sweet. and hello. I don't like wings and splitters unless they are for a purpose. You have a purpose, so I approve.
Ooh a time attack Speed3. I don't think you've listed it in your post, but what kind of wheels/tires are you running? And what specs?
you need to mount that splitter to the actual metal bumper, not the bumper cover, then it should not want to rip off
if the rules allowed it to be, than i would have used the carbon splitter i built that mounts to the frame. but rules state i can only have it connected to the bumper only. So reinforcing the OEM bumper is what i have to do to stay within the rules [doublepost=1488478975][/doublepost] VMR 810 45+ 18x 8.5 with 245/40R18 tires
I dont know if the rules are inprecise or if you didnt understand what i said. The bumper of the car is the metal crash structure which is hidden from view. The plastic painted part is the bumper cover. If the rules say you can attach to the bumper then you can hit metal
The rules are quite clear, "Front Air Dams, lips, splitters and diffusers may not extend more than 3" beyond the bodywork as viewed from above. Aftermarket front splitter may only go rearward to the front edge of the front wheel, opening and cannot be solidly mounted to the chassis, only to the bumper cover and or OEM tray. " TLR version there is to be no structural attachment points of any sorts, including the Crash bumper. Don't have a stock crash bumper anyway. here is my Solid frame mounted one... the bumper would mount to it as such i could stand on it and would support as much weight as the hardware would allow. and some times it was used as shovel The rule intent is to limit the amount of front downforce by taking away the solid structure element of the design. The class i run does not allow the more structural mounted setup i have, not unless i want to chase a sponsored team GTR that has 300K dumped into it. so unless someone wants to step up and fund me as Limited or unlimited class, am bound to this setup. Re-enforcing the oem mounting points are not specified in the rules so until say something, that's the route am going.
Alright so the rules do state bumper cover that sucks. Do you have much attachment to the smile piece? That is much stronger than the painted piece. If you have it i would recommend putting the steel crash bumper back in even if it is hacked to shit, it will help hold the floppy bumper up. Are you running the factory undertray?
yes, and re-enforced with 6061T6 tube with large fender washers to distribute the load better on the plastics. my problem is not the splitter moving or flexing much to the bumper but once you reach 80-85 you start to rip the cover from stock mounting locations. I could flatten it out more to reduce the aero effect, but then am just kicking the problem to a higher speed. ahh, CPE FMIC and its mounting bracket live there now, think i chucked the oem crash bar a few years ago plus it would be such a pain in the ass to mount the OEM bar and cut it up to the point to fit the FMIC fits corretly and have the functional front tow location. Having been towed off track one, the CPE tow location works well. that sounds like silly question... but yes, i do in fact use it
We have a bracket available to help hold on the bumper cover. Could help keep the splitter from ripping your bumper off. They don't say anything about mounting of the bumper cover itself, do they? Rules interpretation is one of the fine points of racing. Crapatalk, it sucks for free!
they don't, hence the search to re-enforce it. i did buy one and all the fenders clips. But am not happy how it will install with all the stacked up washers, so as soon as i get it i will be sending it back. I'll probably make a set out of solid 6061 and run that.
