What's up guys. I bought an 09 Mazdaspeed 3 back in March. Last Thursday I noticed that I had a knock reading at 7, wasn't at WOT because the car was still cold and I had just left for work. I started doing some logging and I haven't gotten anything that high since then. I did get a 4.2 a few hours later on the same day but again, not at WOT. I've attached it below. I've been doing some data logging every day since then at all times and I haven't gotten anything above .7 during normal driving, 0 at WOT. I was never in boost when the KR was high. The 7 scares me and being new to this platform, is this something I should be concerned about?

The current known mods are CS intake, unknown brand TIP, CS BPV and a CS Catback. Everything else is stock. Currently running a Cobb OTS Stage 1. I already know those are crap through tons of research and I do plan on going with Freektune very soon. I just got a Autotech HPFP Internal for it. Any help would be great.

Can't view datalogs on my phone, that being said knock at part throttle is normal, 7 certainly being high. Cobb ots maps are hot garage and can cause increased knock I ways had more in them than I did when I swapped to a real tune. I'd suggest trying to go back to stock tune (Cobb stage 0 I believe it's stock copy).
Get those internals in asap, with fresh plugs before the tune. do you have ethanol around you? A couple of gallons or few litres in the tank could help settle things down. If that's not available 93 or 94? Will help too. Sometimes bad gas, thinking inconsistent fill-up from an abnormal station could cause it too.

Would I be able to safely run the stock tune on the mods I have? I planned on getting a Freektune OTS map until I get a down pipe and basic maintenance out the way - injector cleaning with seals, valve cleaning, etc. I also need to address a rear clunk, lol.

I replaced the plugs right after I bought them with NGKs and I’ve put maybe 1200 miles on them. I always get 93 but only at Costco, Chevron or Shell. Since you brought that up, the car did sit for about a month due to Covid and using the SUV more than usual. I didn’t even think about that. I’ll be getting the internals put in within the next 2 days. Thanks!

2 weeks probably shouldn't do it, don't know about shell down your way but up here in Canada it has no ethanol in the higher mixes, o think Costco might? Than ethanol even at 10% could help reduce knock.

What I'm getting at is the knock could be false, and related to tune and not your engine, hence flashing to the Cobb ots 0 map as it's their simulated stock map to see if that reduces things. Even though the Cobb stage 1 map says it can be used with the hpfp sometimes it doesn't play well.

Other than noticing the knock and the car almost a week ago and the car sitting for about 2 weeks anything else new?

I’m starting to think it was a false knock as well. I have a 15 minute commute to work and I got nothing today.

There’s nothing new on the car. I’ve been focused on only maintenance - pads and rotors, 2 oil changes, valve cover gasket(no signs of a faulty VVT yet), compression test, OEM pcv valve/Damond plate(not installed yet) and new plugs. I did get a rebuilt K04 because I was smoking on startup. I tried Rotella with no success and also read how it wasn’t good anymore. Hence why I’ve done 2 oil changes. It magically disappeared when I switch to Pennzoil Platinum, lol.

Sounds like you're ontop of the maintenance that's good. Don't neglect that valve cleaning if mileage has been getting up there especially if EGR has been in place for the engines life and no OCC.

Remeber to do a short oil change on the first Pennzoil because Rotella doesn't play well with other oils.
knock can certainly be alarming, hopefully it is just false. If it's staying off during normal driving you can certainly try taking a wot log before you start tuning.

I plan on deleting the EGR after I clean the valves. I’m currently at 121k and I’m sure it hasn’t been done. I’ll see once I put the new PCV on though. 10 years ago, when I was young and dumb, maintenance would’ve been the last thing on my list. I actually have a screenshot from another post on this forum where someone provided a Todo list for new owners before modding. It was basic, but I saw 2 things I would overlook unless I was having issues.

I didn’t know that about Rotella! I’ll definitely add another oil change to my list for the next month. I have been doing at least 1-3 WOT pulls while data logging. I never get any kind of knocks at WOT. I honestly got the HPFP because I had what felt like a fuel cut at WOT once about 3 weeks ago. That’s what led me to look at my internals. I couldn’t tell if it was me or a genuine fuel cut. It hasn’t done it since then nor have I had any dips on the AP. I figure it’s better safe than sorry, lol.

Yeah short interval being like 3-4k doesn't need to an urgent change just wouldn't recommend doing a full interval. Hpfp can dip low, some are better than others for stock ones the machine tolerances aren't that great so some folks zzb with just an intake (gen2 is particularly bad for not tolerating it) others are just fine but over the years it's definitely become that don't risk it mod sorry for your wallet.

Glad to hear those WOT logs are knock free
