Carbon fibre… CARS on FIRE

Well today I attempted to make a battery cover, for my first attempt I think it went pretty well. Before installing it I will insulate the terminals as CF does conduct electricity.

It weighs 84 grams. Once completely dry I will sand the edge smooth/straight.

Im going to make some Covers for the PS and Coolant jugs next using the same method.

if anyone is wondering how much it cost, I bought 3 rolls of carbon (200mmx1000mm each for $60 CAD (cheap) and I went to micheals craft store and got thier clear epoxy casting resin using the %40 coupon it was under $20.

I only used a half a roll of the carbon and half the resin.. (I bought a small pack of epoxy resin to experiment, I will go back tomorrow with the same Coupon and get the bigger jug haha)

I didn’t use any mold release, I put the bin in the freezer and that sucker popped right out of there. I can reuse the container to try again if I want.

and on a side note : don’t use that gold foil near your exhaust, I bought the car with a gold foil heat shield behind the turbocharger, well last night it caught on fire, luckily I was only 5 or 6 blocks from home. I was able to drive the car home and extinguish the fire with the garden hose. I can say I have never been more afraid of loosing my car, there was thick smoke billowing out my windshield wipers and coming into the cabin. I had someone jaw dropped staring as I drove by.

replaced with metal!!! Hopefully nobody else has this stuff on thier firewall because that’s what it turned into… a wall on fire!

 

The gold foil wasn't *ON* the stock heat shield was it? You don't use that shit to seal heat in, you use it to reflect heat away; it's not an insulator in that regard, only radiant reflector.

 

Yes the previous owner wrapped the stock heatshield I suppose. That’s what it was like when I bought it.

 

The back panel one is fine, I meant the heat shield that's normally on the downpipe itself.

 

The downpipe is a catless J2 engineering that has Ti fabric wrap on it, That was fine. The gold foil On the firewall was not. I just bought a Ti Blanket for the turbo, just have to figure out if it’s going to work with my turbo, I feel like the blanket is too small for the turbo now that I have it in my hand.

 

I ended up making some more carbon stuff for my car. The front splitter, the rear spoiler add on, headlight intake, small grille intake. The next part is the plastic filler panel on the front bumper.
