    2008 Mazdaspeed 3

When backing out of the drive, when I hit the brake there is a small clunk coming from the wheel/hub area, then shift into 1st drive to the stopsign and hit the brake, same noise. The noise disappears completely once I'm on the road moving forward, no noises once I have braked twice in the same direction (back or forward) even under pretty hard braking.

I got under there and checked boots on both sides, boots are in perfect shape, no leaking or grease.

However, when I firmly grasp the outer section of the shaft near the outer boot, and pull/push it forward and backward (front of car to back of car), I hear pretty much the same noise, and there is a LITTLE play on the hub side, like no more than a couple mm but there is movement, and the noise is almost identical to that described above. Is that play normal?

Otherwise what might be the issue causing the noise? I checked caliper bolts and they are all properly torqued. Haven't touched brakes or suspension in about a year, so I don't think it's any problems with a recent install.

Could also be a strut mount bearing.

is the movement/noise when I push/pull on the cv axle normal? Is there usually a little bit of play like that?

I believe there is a little give. Cc usually ticks on turns.
