Was actually discussing this in a few chats this week.

Nothing you can go buy at the dealership right now can last a full 20 minute session.

The Hyundai N cars all over heat massively. Got a local guy with a bone stock engine DCT veloster N. With an oil cooler(it’s an eBay one but still) 2 laps and he’s seeing 280f oil temps. Keep in mind his laps are 1.5-2 seconds slower than my laps.

Corolla GR the diff dies after 2 laps. Civic type R is also a 2 lap wonder before oil temps are ridiculously high.

Maybe the C8 corvette can do a 20 minute session but for 100k I’d hope so?

We were also discussing anything new that could replace my civic for price to lap time. Even a brand new type R stock from Honda would probably be able to run the same lap times MAYBE, but that’s 65k Canadian vs I’m maybe 25k deep including cost of the car and a blown up forged engine.

really makes you think. And don’t even bring up the Subaru BRZ. The new ones are bigger pieces of shit than the old ones. Engines failing everywhere.

My buddies bone stock engine genesis coupe, 3 laps and he’s short shifting braking early lifting early. Total noob driver. 3 laps and his oil temp gauge is maxed at 280.

    turbo life

I seem to remember Mazda doing a press event when the released the gen 2 ms3 at Laguna seca and the only change they made was to a track brake pad otherwise they took the beating all day

That's because it was based on a prior model year that was designed for autocross and not pandering to ignorant kids.

    Edit:
Ignorant kids still bought it and proceeded to drag race it at the strip, but that's another story.

I think my Gen 2 was a good example. It was solid on track. Now I wasn’t driving how I am these days but back then I was all about max sessions max seat time. Full 20 minute sessions.

The car always had the gt30 on it. ~24psi and it made ~330whp based on Vdyno

that car needed a big ass oil cooler to survive 20 minutes but I was able to make it happen. It was doable.

For me to take that car to the next level it would’ve needed more wheel and tire, so modifying the front fenders. Would’ve needed to be stripped/gutted. Would’ve needed PI plumbed up which scared me. I had my PI fuel rail brackets break twice at the track. Thankfully it wasn’t plumbed. Would’ve needed a proper suspension with spring rates.

It’s just a lot of additional fucking around and I didn’t have the budget, or the seat time to take a 400whp+ car to the track and not just be absolutely embarrassing out there.

If this is true then that’s gangster AF. I guess bone stock it had enough cooling capacity to survive. That’s cool. Even this bone stock modern shit can’t

It's Mazda I would expect them to make sure their performance cars work on the track.

Miata’s work but they are low stress and NA.
I guess Mazda doesn’t make anything in that space these days though.

Well it’s official now. My first legit sponsor. He’s been my tuner/engine guy since 2023. Should’ve had this done sooner for him.

With all the competition decals on the car it should look like a real race car next season. Kinda exciting idk. I’m a nobody so any type of sponsorship is huge.

The Elantra N can do double sessions at Road Atlanta in 90+ weather without skipping a beat.

My '22 BRZ has been chugging along for 2.5 years without an oil cooler with zero engine problems and oil temps hitting 270. Engine failures were from racing teams under-filling 0w20 oil to gain a couple hp at COTA and Road America. I am on my 3rd transmission though. :/

I honestly feel like transmission is worse from a design perspective because there is so much less that can go wrong the only reason they would fail is being underbuilt intentionally.

Maybe Elantra got better cooling cause the veloster seems to be useless

This is odd. Engine failures seem to be more common. My 8th Gen transmission isn’t the best either though. Freshly rebuilt it feels fantastic but after 2 hard seasons rebuild is necessary. Thankfully the aftermarket has it covered

this one is hilarious. It's the transfercase that overheats and causes AWD to be disabled. so cool the transfercase? well, that doesn't matter, because toyota didn't use any temp sensor on the transfercase, they just have an algorithm that predicts when the transfercase overheats.

It’s a sad state. Sure I like the new type R but is it worth anywhere near what they’re asking? Nope.

These new “track cars” seem to really suck. You’d think better tech would equal better cars. Guess not

These cars are designed with modern short attention span/effort people in mind.
And cost savings. Lots of that.

Allllllll the cost savings. I guess it’s at the point now where if all the competition sucks, you can also suck and it’s just fine.

    Too bad

Nah they overheat too but only because spectators get stuck in the radiator.

6th gen V8 Camaros also run without skipping the beat, if you are into that type of car.
