Do you have swas disabled?

 

That limits power input depending on steering angle, right? How can it be disabled?

Another update: I swapped to an OTS map for a session and the problem was fixed. I'm not on my final tune yet so I'll be sending logs to the tuner so they can adjust accordingly.

 

You are correct. You can unplug the sensor in the steering column or most people will wire a switch on the power line in the harness so that they can turn it off and on easily

Who is your tuner?

 

I guess I'd prefer not to say which tuner since I'm only on the second tune (first after submitting datalogs). So I don't want to blame them yet as it's not a finished product. It is a reputable mazdaspeed e-tuner.

 

Nah, we wouldn't lay blame or ridicule on the tuner just yet. If you're only ona first revision then some growing pains aren't entirely unheard of. It's a bit surprising you'd have an issue from the tune since it should still be on the conservative side until later revisions, but if it's one of the platform's big tuners then they'll help sort you out.

I forgot to consider SWAS; you'll definitely want a kill switch on that for the track and any spirited street driving.

 

DEFINITELY disable swas. Specially when tracking. I bought my car 4 years ago. A month into ownership I unplugged the swas. It hasnt been plugged back in since. All swas does is ruin your fun.

 

Alrighty, I hadn't heard of it until now. This'll probably be my last track event of the year so I guess that'll be a decent winter project

 

takes 2 minutes to unplug it and it will help a ton. had a buddy run his speed recently at the track with swas hooked up and me sitting in the passenger side. every corner exit, 3rd gear mostly, swas was kicking in and just totally killing the car, at least 2 seconds of the car just struggling and stumbling. its terrible lol. disable swas.

 

Alright, that definitely sounds like what I was experiencing. I took the car out onto a straight road to try and recreate the problem but just couldn't, it was only happening on track. And it absolutely sucked nailing the corners prior to a long straightaway and then finding that when you needed it the car had nothing left to give.

 

Yup. Definitely swas killing you. Exactly what was happening to my buddy till we unplugged it

 

Have you seen this thread? Apparently just holding the stability control button for 30 seconds in newer genpu's will turn it off? If so that's awesome, wish I'd tried it yesterday

I played around with that a little and it never worked. I think it’s 2013 only or something, it was always a debate on if that really works or not. Either way unplugging it takes about 30 seconds longer, so a minute of your life and swas is gone lol. You’re racing the car, just unplug the swas. No bullshit required.

 

If you're racing just unplug it, now I'll tell you from experience on the 2013 it seems to disable it if holding for that long, I have definitely noticed a difference that being said speaking to others it seems that unplugging the sensor is still best for racing I daily mine and drive it in the snow or I'd be unplugging it myself

 

One big downside to unplugging it is the power steering will sometimes cut out at low low speeds like creeping around parking lots. That’s always a fun surprise when you’re not expecting it

 

That sounds terrifying! But looks like its a pretty easy job to disconnect, most likely I'll just unhook it for each track day and then reconnect

 

I was wondering the other day....would it be feasible to swap in a gen1 PS pump and extend the serp belt and bypass that issue? Or did enough change between gens to make it more involved than that?

 

I believe enough changed that I don’t even think that’s possible? Gen2’s have some type of electric assist and the gen1’s didn’t have this to my knowledge

 

Gen2 is def electric, that's why SWAS is able to affect it. Gen1 is mechanically driven so it's like "fuck you I do what I want." They're positioned in the same spot on the block is why I wonder if it would be at all possible. But since Gen2 is beep boop electric, idk if it's tied into the ECU in some sorta pain in the ass manner...I suppose it must be.

Had what's likely to be my last track day of the year yesterday at Nelson Ledges. SWAS kicked in right away, and I was able to verify that holding the DSC button for ~10 seconds does in fact disable it in my car. The car did pretty well, I was passing pretty much everybody which felt kinda nice. That has NOT been the case at the NASA events I've been to, they pump out some seriously talented drivers.


Going forwards, I've got a few upgrades planned for the car. My Koyo radiator and JBR oil cooler have finally shipped. The highest coolant temp I've seen on track has been 210*f, so I don't know for certain that I'll benefit much from these, but I'll have peace of mind. I've also got an oil temp/pressure gauge to go along with it. My tires are pretty close to finished, so I've gotta decide whether or not to bite the financial bullet and get wider wheels and tires for next year... Plus I'm tired of the stock wheels getting covered in brake dust and looking crappy, a dark gray/matte black might be better.
