So i'm looking at a Speed 6 that has a 2010 Speed 3 engine, and everything looked good but there were 2 things I wanted to understand about this car before I bought it:

First is by the firewall pretty central to the engine there was a hose just kinda chillin' there, coming from somewhere lower than I could see and pointing up. The owner said it was a "breather hose", but I dont know what that means exactly and I thought it would be weird for it not to be connected to anything, just literally venting out. I'll include a picture of it.

Second is I noticed that after revving the engine a little something in the frontmost right side of the engine bay was smoking a little bit. It was cold and raining so maybe it was just vapor, since it wasn't thick smoke at all, but I still thought I'd ask.

    Any ideas?

Yes, on a MS6 there is a breather hose on the firewall for the transfer case or something like that. I have a MS3 Gen2, so I forget the details. But the weird breather hose has been discussed plenty of times.

As for the smoke, that looks like an oil catch can. Quite a few reasons for why it would smoke. Some might be deal breakers.

I see. The breather hose isn't supposed to be conncetde to anything at the other end? What I've read about it usually didn't mention one end being vented to atmosphere.

And regarding the oil catch can, apparently it could just also be normal, correct? What are some of the worse possibilities that would make it smoke?

As far as I know, that vent tube is supposed to stay open like that on the firewall.

As far as the catch can, as long as it was just mild smoke and it was cold and wet, you should be fine. If it starts smoking once it's warmed up and idling, could be worn rings or cracked ringlands. Based on what you described, it doesn't sound concerning.

I appreciate that a lot my friend! Yeah it's very very mild and the owner seemed like he was trying to do things right in terms of the mods he put on the engine. It seemed all pretty healthy.

Last but not least, it's pushing about 22 PSI on a '10 speed 3 engine, is that an ok amaount of pressure? He has a few mods on it but all bolt ons, I dont hink there's anything done inside the block. I may de-boost a little anyways if I can do it without needing a new tune

All depends on the torque curve

In other words, as long as boost builds gradually the engine SHOULD be okay?

Has nothing to do with max boost or the boost curve. You need to look at the torque curve

Also depends on who tuned it. If it was dramatune watch out

it has a tune from freektune on it, which I’ve read that Justin is pretty much the best guy out there according to this forum. I didn’t realize it was him until I just googled it now. I think I should be good, he seems to know what he’s doing!
When driving the car, i dont get a kick in the back, more like a progressive “scoop” until I’m positively glued to the seat, so that should mean that the curve is gradual and wont grenade my engine… right? Heh heh
