Replacing rear hub and bearing

For anyone wanting to replace a rear hub and bearing … it sucked

Getting the hub off was insane. It took about 80 min using a mix of a hub puller with a multi-hundred lbs impact, penetrating oil, and a mini sledgehammer. Easily the most physically taxing job I’ve ever done on a car.

And getting the fused snap ring out was really difficult. And the bolt head for the speed sensor broke off. And pressing out the old bearing was very difficult even with a hydraulic press. It needed some sledgehammer action too.

But in the end my car is so quiet now so I’m pleased. I used the Durago 29596039. Seems great so far but I haven’t driven much.

 

HA! I just had this battle myself, after beating the ever living fuck out of it with a 5 LB hammer, and heating with a torch and making ZERO progress I said NOPE. Went to Harbor Freight and bought myself an air hammer with a chisel attachment. Still took quite a bit of effort but I was able to pop them out in about 5 mins each using that.

I went with the BCA WE60617 from Rock Auto.

Edit: I'm an idiot you are talking about a Speed 6 and I'm talking about a Speed 3 rear bearing.

 

That’s crazy you had that much trouble with a Speed3. I thought the main issue was because of the axle on the Speed6 and the press fit bearing and hub which are separate pieces on the 6.

 

Yeah they were very stuck from over 9 years of being my DD in Chicagoland. Car saw road salt and winter. I did treat it with Fluid film for the past 5 years but corrosion has a way of finding places.

I was on the verge of giving up and sourcing some nice used trailing arms from a salvage yard out in AZ.

Air chisel for the WIN! Although the wife nearly threw me out of the house for the evening. It's pretty loud and she found it VERY annoying.
