Looking at GPS to help me measure my track times. Right now I tried using my phone but I get a feed back rate of around 0.5-1 Hz which isn’t really helpful if im trying to see how Im improving. So right now Im using my go-pro to get approximate times but that kind of sucks too.

I was looking at these two below as recommended by Harry’s lap timers site. I don’t know if these are good or bad or what. Anyone have any experience? My budget isn’t the highest for this, and as I track around 3 times a year I don’t plan on making a big investment in something better but way more expensive.

    SkyPro XGPS160 GPS

    Garmin GLO Portable GPS

Both offer 10 Hz with the garmin being much cheaper. I don’t know if I even need 10 Hz. Is 5Hz acceptable in peoples opinion?

This is all somewhat new ground for me, so Im looking for anyone who hits up the road courses opinions. Thanks.

I have the Dual SkyPro XGPS160.

It works quite well, and beats the shit out of any phone's GPS.

It's the only product like it that I've ever owned, so I can't really provide a comparative review against the Garmin - but for augmenting laptimer software, it seems to work great.

I'm not sure the Garmin unit was available when I got mine (or if it was, I don't ever remember looking at it) but it seems to offer much of the same features, as you noted. The slower SkyPro unit was about $100 or so when I bought mine, so I figured why not spend a bit more for double the update rate and got the XGPS160.

The only bad thing people on Amazon seem to be saying about the Garmin is that it's too easy to accidentally turn it on when it is in a bag and that it kills its own battery because of that.

It also has a replaceable battery, so that's another potential plus (besides cost, of course)...

    Cool man, thanks.

I will do more reading about the garmin. $50 would be a nice bit of savings for sure.

I've done a poor job at capturing data over the last few years. I did jump on the Kickstarter for race capture since I know a bunch of people with the pro version. I'm excited to give it a try, for $150 it wasn't a bad deal to get in early on.

That plugs into the OBD2 port it looks like? Im not sure how I feel about that. I have my AP plugged in there for monitoring during the events.

50 Hz is quite the resolution, but at $250 its out of my price range I think.

Yes you can run off the obdII or I'm planning on direct can access for the Miata. You can log any ecu output and arrange the dash as you like on a tablet.

Like I said, I got in earlier and got a better deal. For everything they offer including go pro control I think it's well featured at that price.

Hmm, hooking up to the go pro would be pretty sweet plus a couple of other things it has that are real nice. Taking my OBD2 port though is a killer for me.
