Would you happen to have a pic of what you're referring to?

This one. The car will crank all day but will not start without this ground connected. Screenshot_20240303_212515_Gallery.jpg

Yeah... One minute. Let me run to the garage and get you a better picture. But yes, I bet that is the one.

    Hold on.

This ground on your coil harness.
    20240303_212820.jpg

That bolts to this plate to ground the harness, the plate mounts here.

THAT is what that plate was for.... by god. TY! Might have to wait until the morning it's almost midnight now. That's would make sense it'd be the problem.

Yeah, I discovered years ago the hard way how important that ground and plate is. If you need I can get you better pictures to be more specific about how everything should fit there. Just have to wait till tomorrow night as I'd have to reassemble it on a second block.

Actually... Have you read my VVT thread?

Yeah, the first dozen pictures explain this in detail with good pictures.

Between what you sent here and what's in your VVT thread, should be able to figure it out. I had that plate sitill out there in a bag with the 2 screws and wasn't sure what it was for exactly, just thought it was something random that was left on there from previous owner. I don't have the gold looking ground piece like what is on yours but believe what I got pictured above is the right thing.

Good. Yeah, if the line that ring terminal is attached is black, then absolutely that is the coil ground.

Hope that fixes the no start issue.

Alright I’ve got the ground in place and still not getting it to start. Won’t even go with carb cleaner. It sounds like it wants to start and then it never does. Not sure what I’m missing here.

Check all grounds with a meter to ensure they are grounded. The ground we discussed, then you have one on the block near the o2 sensor plugs, and two on a plate bolted to the front of the transmission above the slave cylinder.

Then two behind the driver side headlight.

Is the in tank pump working? If yes, are you getting fuel to the HPFP? If yes, is the HPFP sending fuel to the rail?

This is about all I can ask right now. I can help more once I get home after 7pm MST.

Edit: err, did you double check timing again before you reassembled? Just to be safe.

I will double check all of the grounds again when I get back home. Feel like it's something silly like that.

I can confirm that fuel is getting to the rail. And yessir timing was double checked before reassembly. Feeling confident that we got that right. BUT. First time and suppose I could have jacked something up. One thing is when I turn the key on I don't hear the fuel pump or anything if I stick my ear up to the tank. Not sure if maybe that's bad?

Would there be any connections from the wastegate possibly that could effect it starting? Wasn't positive I hooked all of that up correctly.

Need to throw a scanner on it as well and see if that shows me anything I suppose. Should I be seeing any codes on my accessport at this point? I assume not since battery has disconnected and it hasn't actually started back up yet.

WG shouldn't affect starting. If the pump isn't priming it could be due to the fact that the rail has good pressure. But that could mean there is an issue. I would also check all your fuses with a meter as well.

Log the start attempt with the AP. I personally am not good at reading logs and tend to forget to use the AP as a tool to help. But others might see something.

Ah that's cool. didn't know you could log the start. I'll do that and see what I can find/see what someone else can gather from the logs. Fuses, grounds, and startup logs will be my focus for this evening.

Also, just remembered this. While messing with it this morning the battery just randomly completely died and I had nothing. I don't know if that's just from trying to start it a few times or what but had to jump it to get it back going again and then it was fine to keep trying to start under it's own power.

And one more thing. When trying to start it the RPM gauge at times was bouncing back and forth a bit crazy and the dash lights and stuff seemed to kind of dim in and out. Didn't do this every time just a couple times. Don't know if that was related to battery or not.

Could it be the hpfp is getting enough pressure? When I monitor the accessport while trying to start the car, psi never goes over 210.

I would leave your battery on a trickle charger. It won't take much messing around to kill the battery.

That sounds normal for start up on the gauges.

There is a way to test fuel pressure and to ensure everything is functioning properly. I'll have to search for that. You should most definitely see fuel pressure. But it should be much higher than 200.

Could it mean that the fuel pump internals are going bad, potentially? When we took it off, the little piston cap thing inside had fallen out. I don't know if that is indicative of an issue with the internals or if it just kind of slides off like the tappets.

Ummm... Don't take this the wrong way... But....

    What? Pictures?

Did you upgrade the fuel pump internals? This is how the pump breaks down.

@hoodratkp where at in Virginia are you btw?

I lived in Virginia Beach for 10 years. There are a TON of speeds all over VA. I might even be able to get someone close to you who knows more to assist.
